RF Power Amplifier optimizes power for CDMA handsets.

Press Release Summary:

Housed in 3 x 3 mm package, RMPA0965 is optimized for CDMA2000-1X applications in 824-849 MHz frequency band. Single positive-supply operation, low power, and shutdown modes provide 40% CDMA mode efficiency at +28 dBm average output power. Dual-stage power amplifier is matched to 50 ohm on input and output, minimizing need for external components. Power-added efficiency and linearity result from proprietary InGaP Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor process.

Original Press Release:

Fairchild's RF Power Amplifier in Compact 3x3 mm Packaging Provides Leading Edge Power Efficiency for CDMA Handsets

San Jose, CA-August 25th, 2004-Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) today released the RMPA0965, an RF power amplifier optimized for CDMA2000-1X applications in the 824-849 MHz frequency band for today's rapidly evolving handset requirements. The RMPA0965's single positive-supply operation, low power and shutdown modes provide 40% CDMA mode efficiency at +28 dBm average output power. When used in CDMA cell phone applications, the device's high/low power modes optimize battery talk-time and reduce current consumption during peak phone usage.

The two-stage RMPA0965 power amplifier is matched to 50 Ohms on both the input and output. This matching minimizes the need for external components, thereby reducing Bill of Material (BOM) part count and simplifying designs. The high power-added efficiency (PAE) and excellent linearity of this product are achieved using Fairchild's proprietary InGaP Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) process. The RMPA0965's LCC package also provides industry standard pin-outs. This product greatly enhances Fairchild's position in the CDMA handset market. The RMPA0965 was recently designed into the next-generation platform of one of Korea's leading handset manufacturers, with production shipments beginning this month.

"Today's ultra-portable products, including cell phones, handheld computers, PDAs and others, are quickly converging into multi-use, multi-feature single devices," says Russ Wagner, general manager of Fairchild's RF power products group. "Fairchild's RMPA0965 provides handset designers with a high-performance, space-saving alternative to larger 4x4 mm power amplifier modules, while meeting the full spectrum of demanding design requirements."

In addition to the new RMPA0965, Fairchild's extensive portfolio of high-volume components for the wireless communications industry includes HBT and pHEMT GaAs MMICs, transmit modules and components for handsets, WLAN systems, wireless base stations, data communications systems, and millimeter wave systems.
