Globus Medical Introduces MARS(TM) Minimally Invasive Retractor System

AUDUBON, Pa., May 25 -- Globus Medical, Inc., the largest privately-held spinal implant manufacturer in the world, announced the introduction of the MARS(TM) Minimal Access Retractor System. MARS(TM) is a comprehensive retractor system designed to provide efficient access to the lumbar spine through small incisions. The system, comprised of retractors, ports and other instruments, enables surgeons to safely perform discectomies, posterior lateral fusions and interbody fusions with relative ease and efficiency.

"The MARS System complements our PIVOT(TM) MIS System and fills out our MIS product portfolio," said Rick Kienzle, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Globus Medical. "The core competency we have developed in MIS is a key strategic asset for Globus, impacting our system design concepts in fusion, motion preservation and biomaterials."

"What truly sets MARS apart from other systems is its complete intraoperative variability," stated Andy Iott, Group Engineering Manager, Thoracolumber Group, Globus Medical. "Everything about this system, from the shape and length of the blades to the way that the retractor is mounted to the table, is customizable. It can be adapted to the needs of each individual patient and surgeon. MARS is indisputably the most versatile retractor in the market."

The MARS retractor frame features a removable medial blade for increased adaptability; individually retracted blades at three positions; a release lever to relax retractor tension on tissue; cephalad, caudad and lateral blade retraction to allow for multi-level procedures; several table arm attachment points to maintain intraoperative rigidity; infinite blade adjustment; large and small retractor frames to provide additional system flexibility; and up to 20° of blade angulation to provide exposure at all four positions. The frame is available in both large and small sizes. MARS retractor blades, made of radiolucent aluminum, range in length from 40 mm to 120 mm, and are available in both straight and beveled options.
