Resolver solves aerospace sealing problems.

Press Release Summary:

Canned-rotor magnetic resolver eliminates shaft seal for rotary feedback sensors in hydraulic actuators. Design permits rotor to operate directly in hydraulic fluid such as Skydrol or in liquid hydrogen. It operates at pressures to 3,000 psi, speeds to 10,000 rpm, and temperatures from -25 to +220°C. Rotary transducer transmits absolute position information from rotating parts inside sealed container without need of shaft seal.

"Canned-Rotor" Resolver Solves Aerospace Sealing Problem

Lebanon, N.H. January 16, 2004. Several leading airline manufacturers are using a unique "canned-rotor" magnetic resolver to eliminate the shaft seal for rotary feedback sensors in hydraulic actuators. The resolver design, illustrated below, permits the rotor to operate directly in hydraulic fluid such as Skydrol or in liquid hydrogen.

According to the resolver manufacturer, Admotec Inc., Lebanon, N.H. (admotec. com), this special resolver will operate at pressures up to 3000 psi, speeds up to 10,000 rpm and temperatures from -25° to +220°C. This rotary transducer transmits absolute position information from rotating parts inside the sealed container without the need of a shaft seal.

Although initially designed for aerospace use, the "canned-rotor" resolver or RVDT can also be used in automotive and other industrial applications where shaftless resolver sealing is required.

This special transducer is based on a standard product, the Rotasyn resolver (shown below), that has fewer moving parts and a solid rotor without slots or the need for a transformer.

Admotec develops and produces precision magnetic encoders and solid rotor resolvers that provide high performance for the demanding conditions of aerospace, automotive, nuclear, heavy mill duty and general industrial applications. With offices in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Zurich, Switzerland, Admotec is well-positioned to meet the motion and position sensing needs of original equipment manufacturers around the world.
