Vishay's MTR and MTT Thin Film, Wire Bondable, Multi-Tap Resistor Chips Provide Design Flexibility and Exceptional Film Stability Over Time and Temperature

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - June 30, 2003 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced two new series of thin film, wire bondable, multi-tap resistor chips that simplify the design and trimming of hybrid circuits while providing exceptional film stability over time and temperature.

The MTR series offers up to 11 taps and the MTT series offers up to 19 taps to enable designers to select specified increments and a wide range of resistor values. Wire bonding to the appropriate pad allows designers to select the desired resistance value for hybrid circuits in a broad variety of military, medical, instrumentation, and other applications, as well as for applications requiring active resistor value selection following hybrid assembly.

Resistor chips in the MTR series measure 0.03 in. by 0.03 in. and are available with total resistance ranging from 100 Ù to 240 kÙ in two different configurations. The design of the MTR incorporates 12 resistors; seven resistors offer 12.5% of the total resistance, and five resistors offer 2.5% of the total resistance. The tightest available tolerance of the total resistance is 5%, and the tightest TCR value is ±100 ppm/°C.

Vishay Electro-Films' new MTT resistor series features dimensions of 0.038 in. by 0.038 in. and is available with total resistance ranging from 1.1 kÙ to 275 kÙ. The design of the MTT includes 20 resistors; 10 resistors provide 9.1% of the total resistance, and 10 resistors provide 0.91% of the total resistance. MTT resistor chips feature a tight total tolerance as low as 1% and tight TCR of ±250 ppm/°C.

Manufactured using Vishay Electro-Films' sophisticated thin film equipment and manufacturing technology, MTR and MTT resistor chips feature a highly stable, self-passivating tantalum nitride resistor. The standard bonding pad metalization is aluminum, but gold pads are also available. An oxidized silicon substrate provides good power dissipation. Both series are 100% electrically tested and visually inspected to MIL-PRF-38534, and are specified for an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. They are suitable for use with other Vishay products including chip resistors and capacitors, as well as other hybrid components.

The versatile chips released today enable manufacturers to purchase fewer components and reduce component costs by using the same chip model in a variety of applications. The MTR and MTT series also allow vendors to manufacture a more accurate product that yields lower end-product costs.

Samples and production quantities of the new PWA and PWB thin film wire-bondable power resistors are available now with a lead time of eight weeks for larger orders. Prices for U.S. delivery in 1,000-piece quantities start at $0.78 for the PWA and $1.78 for the PWB.
