Resettable Switch provides overcurrent protection.

Press Release Summary:

Coated PolySwitch(R) TRW250-180 radial-leaded device protects ADSL modems, main distribution frame modules and central office, customer premise and access network equipment from lightning and power surges. It has rated hold current of 180 mA and helps design engineers meet ITU and Telcordia GR-974 requirements. Low-resistance, through-hole device limits fault energy, enabling OEMs to design products that use less-expensive, smaller, lower-power components.

Original Press Release:

New Coated PolySwitch(R) Device Provides Resettable Overcurrent Protection for ADSL Modems and MDF Modules

MENLO PARK, CA-March 29, 2002- Tyco Electronics announces a new Raychem Circuit Protection product, a coated version of its popular TRW250-180 series of radial-leaded PolySwitch (R) devices. The new PolySwitch TRW250-180 device provides resettable overcurrent protection - with improved mechanical characteristics and dielectric voltage withstand capabilities compared to the uncoated TR250-180U device - for MDF (main distribution frame) modules, ADSL modems, and central office, customer premise and access network equipment.

The low-resistance, through-hole device offers a rated hold current of 180mA. When compared to traditional lightning-robust fuses that hold more than 1A and pass fault currents of 2A or more, the TRW250-180 device significantly limits fault energy, enabling OEMs to design products that use less-expensive, smaller, lower-power components. In addition to interrupting potentially damaging power faults, TRW250-180 devices are robust to ITU-TK.20/21/45 lightning surges, making them an appropriate choice for protection of modems designed for use around the world.

"The decision to coat these devices was made in response to customer requests for insulated devices that can be used in high-density or space-constrained applications, where there is a concern about components being in contact with each other or any grounded surface," said Rodrigo Rubiano, Telecommunications and Networking Market Manager for Tyco Electronics Power Components. "The device helps ADSL and MDF design engineers meet ITU and Telcordia GR-974 requirements," he added.

The TRW250-180 device is available in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume manufacturing, or in bulk quantities. It is also available in resistance binned packaging for applications with more stringent line balance requirements.
