First Lead-Free PolySwitch® Device for Telecom Applications Features Insulating Coating, Low Resistance, and Small Footprint

MENLO PARK, CA-October 25, 2002- Tyco Electronics announces Raychem Circuit Protection's first lead-free PolySwitch® resettable device for telecom and networking applications. The new PolySwitch TRF250-180 device helps provide resettable overcurrent protection - with improved mechanical characteristics provided by an insulating coating - for xDSL modems, splitters, and MDF equipment that must comply with ITU-T recommendations.

The small footprint, low-resistance, through-hole device features a rated hold current of 180 mA, and is suitable for ambient temperatures up to 85°C. When compared to traditional lightning-robust fuses that hold more than 1A and pass fault currents of 2A or more, the TRF250-180 device limits the let-through energy to a significantly lower level, enabling product designs that utilize less-expensive, smaller, lower-power components. In addition to interrupting potentially damaging power faults, the TRF250-180 device is robust to ITU-T K.20/21/45 lightning surges, making it an appropriate choice for protection of telecom and networking equipment designed for use around the world.

"This new product was developed in response to customer requests for a smaller insulated device that could be used in high-density or space-constrained applications," said Rodrigo Rubiano, Telecommunications and Networking Market Manager for Raychem Circuit Protection. "The device meets ITU-T recommendations for both customer premise and central office applications, and also helps manufacturers comply with local environmental regulations," he added.

The TRF250-180 device is available in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume manufacturing, or in bulk quantities. For further information or technical assistance, call (800) 227-7040 or (650) 361-6900 or visit www.tycopowercomponents.com.
