Replenish Reusable Bottling Systems and Nypro Packaging Announce a Joint Venture to Produce a Reusable Bottle for Multiple Consumer Uses

New System Saves Up to 90% in plastics, oil and CO2 emissions

HANOVER PARK, Illinois - Four companies with vast experience in sustainable consumer products are enabling a new manufacturing capability for a reusable bottling system designed to revolutionize the way consumers purchase and use liquid-based products for household use or personal consumption. Applications include multi-surface cleaning, window cleaning, carpet cleaning, air deodorizing, beverage handling, household chemicals, common garden fertilizers, furniture cleaning and virtually any other consumer product that consists largely of water and concentrate.

Replenish Bottling Company, Inc.; Nypro Inc. and Radius Product Development have announced a joint venture to provide reusable plastic bottle manufacturing solutions to companies needing containers for their liquid consumer products. Virtually all major consumer companies today are seeking containers that reduce their impact on the environment without compromising quality or the user experience, or adversely impacting prices, the joint venture said. Eastman Chemical Company also plays a key role by supplying specialty materials to the joint venture.

The solutions will be based on the award-winning Replenish Reusable Bottle System. This bottle system was the Bronze Medal Winner in the Energy and Sustainability, Packaging Segment at the 2011 Edison Best New Product Awards on the Science Channel last week.

The "secret" to the patented system is the use of a pod of concentrated product attached to an all plastic durable bottle that houses an integrated measuring cup. The bottle can be refilled many times with tap water in the home giving the user the equivalent of four full bottles of household product per pod and multiple re-uses of the durable bottle. This eliminates the cost of processing, handling, storage and transportation of 93% of all the water that goes into the vast majority of household liquid products, reduces freight by 16- to 20-times over the standard 1-time bottles and is economically efficient for retailers and consumers. After the initial purchase of the durable bottle, the continuous sale is on the pod which reduces the plastic content going to the landfill by 90%. Completing the ecological benefit, the pods and bottles are made from specialty PET resins developed and distributed by Eastman Chemical.

Paul Kayser, Group President of Nypro Packaging and a member of the manufacturing group, said "Nypro Packaging is firmly committed to continue to bring no-compromise sustainable packaging solutions to our brand customers. Game changing solutions like Replenish Bottling Systems show how to leverage our integrated service offering, which includes Radius Product Development and Nypro's global manufacturing capabilities, to make significant shifts in how consumer products are brought to market, consumed, recycled and/or reused with great partners like Replenish and Eastman."

According to Jason Foster, President of Replenish Bottling Company and also a member of the manufacturing group, "We expect many of the biggest consumer brands in the world will want to be part of this new sustainable packaging paradigm. We all know the majority of the liquid products we buy are mostly water so shipping all that water around the country and lugging it home in bottles is really pretty silly. This is not only better for the environment, it saves money for everyone involved. Innovative thinking combined with great design really does make a difference to the consumer. When you have functionality built into the bottle, it shifts from a dumb disposable to something intelligent with more utility. It shifts back to the way we used to do things with craftsmanship. We are confident this alliance will change the packaged goods category by creating a new option with a smart reusable bottle and distribution system that's good for consumers' wallets, good for companies' bottom lines and good for the environment. Together with Nypro Packaging, Radius Product Development and Eastman Chemical, we're talking to big companies, big brands. Collectively we can change - we can take a billion bottles out of the landfill and a billion miles out of the supply chain. Replenish takes us to the next level," Foster predicted. "We hope it will start a small 'reuse revolution.'"
