Emerson Introduces New Bristol® Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for Applications in Oil & Gas and Water & Wastewater Industries

ControlWave® Express RTU gives users a new standards-based RTU offering exceptional price/performance value for remote measurement and control applications

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 16, 2006) -- Emerson Process Management introduces the ControlWave Express, a versatile, compact, low profile remote terminal unit (RTU) with exceptionally low power consumption for remote installations. Users can use the Express RTU hardware as a component of networked systems for remote applications, or have the option of selecting the RTU as part of the Bristol ExpressPAC, a complete package system for SCADA applications.

Based on worldwide industry standards for programming and communications, ControlWave is a flexible remote automation system. The ControlWave architecture combines the best automation technologies and concepts into a hybrid system well suited to meet the remote application requirements of the energy, water, and wastewater industries. ControlWave technologies are being used to reduce project costs and increase operations efficiency in hundreds of remote automation applications globally.

Now adding significant scalability to the ControlWave family, Express breaks the price/performance barrier for small programmable RTU products, offering the field-proven ControlWave technology in a space efficient package. Some SCADA applications particularly well-suited to the small I/O point count are water pump, tank, well and reservoir control, wastewater lift station and storm water monitoring, and natural gas well, storage and plunger lift control.

ControlWave Express offers rugged, long-term reliability, wide temperature operation (-40 to +70° C) for remote installations and very low power consumption for solar applications. Additionally, it has been designed to meet CE and UL Class I, Div. 2 hazardous location requirements.

As for communication ports, the Express has three serial communication ports and one optional 10/100 Mb Ethernet I/P port. The system facilitates communication with other devices through widely accepted networks such as BSAP, TCP/IP open Modbus, serial Modbus, DF1, DNP3 and HART, which are all standard options within every unit. For open access to most HMI products, Emerson's flexible, easy to implement Bristol OPC Server is offered.

ControlWave Express includes the ControlWave Designer programming software that supports all five IEC 61131-3 programming languages. The Designer programming software is enhanced with a powerful library of ACCOL III process control function blocks allowing the use of a single controller for logic, process control functions, measurement, calculations and data storage. Engineers can also develop their own reusable function blocks, further reducing engineering time and cost. These capabilities are further enhanced with time stamped alarming and historical archive storage within the RTU to provide maximum data integrity. This data is automatically recovered following a communication failure.

In addition to the Express RTU, Emerson offers ControlWave ExpressPAC which is a highly integrated, pre-engineered packaged remote automation solution. ExpressPAC combines the new ControlWave Express RTU with a variety of options commonly required in SCADA applications. These include a compact NEMA 4X rated enclosure, power supply and solar panel options with battery backup, operator display/keypad input options, and wireless communication options. Standardization eliminates the need for in-house panel and packaging design and fabrication resulting in lower initial installation cost. This also standardizes the maintenance effort to reduce the long term cost of ownership.
