Robinair® Announces New SAE J2788 Compliant Refrigerant Recovery & Recharge Unit

The new Robinair Model 34788 Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Unit meets all the stringent requirements of the new mandatory SAE J2788 standard, including new UL shop safety features Owatonna, MN- October 31, 2006-Robinair, a business unit of SPX Corporation, is the only manufacturer to offer a R134a refrigerant recovery and recharging unit that is fully compliant with the new SAE J2788 requirements. The new Robinair Model 34788 is the next generation refrigerant management system, incorporating many of the popular features of the existing industry leader Model 34700Z. According to Brian Berdan, Robinair Product Manager, "We are ahead of the game in meeting this new stringent standard, which will be required by late 2007." Berdan adds, "We fully agree with the new standard because it means increased R134a recovery efficiency from as low as 75% to a mandatory 95%, resulting in far less atmospheric emissions, and requires new shop safety standards." In accordance with the new standards, the Robinair 34788 provides a recharging accuracy to within ±.50 oz., nearly twice the accuracy as any other unit in the market. That will translate to fewer customer come backs by meeting the stringent specifications of new vehicles. Also, the new Robinair unit is compatible with both conventional and hybrid vehicles using electrically driven compressors. The Robinair 34788 is designed to give technicians access to optional vehicle data base software allowing easy updates on refrigerant and compressor oil capacities per vehicle. Berdan also observed, "The new recovery unit is equipped with a slot for a SD [Secure Digital] memory card to allow easy upgrades of field software with essentially no downtime." Productivity and safety are the key attributes of the new unit. A built-in shop safety feature is a new automatic lock-out whenever 150 Pounds of refrigerant has been recovered, requiring a filter change which ensures proper operation and recovery. The unit prompts technicians of a pending filter change at 100 pounds of recovery. Currently, technicians are only prompted to change a filter only when 150 pounds of refrigerant has been recovered, leaving it up to the technician to change the filter. The new Robinair 34788 has all of the convenient operational features of the popular 34700Z, plus a larger operator display screen and a new fold-down control panel which allows for better storage. The new SAE J2788 requirements will become official in late 2006 and will be mandatory a year later-at that point all R134a recovery units will be required to meet the new standard. Existing units already in use in shops will be "grandfathered" under the new requirements, but by mid 2008, sales of older units, including the existing Robinair 34700Z, will become illegal. According to Berdan, "We have decided to aggressively develop this product in order to lead the way in meeting these standards-they are good for the industry, shop productivity and the environment."
