Moxa Industrial Managed Redundant Ethernet Switch - EDS-508 Series Make Network Solution Rugged but Affordable

Moxa Technologies, Inc. recently announced the MOXA EtherDevice(TM) EDS-508 Series, a rugged switch designed for deployment in demanding environments. The Moxa EDS-508 series are not only rugged 8-port switches that provide 10/100BaseTx Ethernet and 100Fx Fiber optical connections, but also provide intelligent switching services, including multicast filtering service-IGMP Snooping, Virtual LAN, security, and quality-of-service (QoS) that help to deliver the benefits of industry-standard Ethernet from the back office to the factory plant, improving productivity and collaborative information flow while reducing total cost of ownership.

According to a recent ARC Advisory Group study, the worldwide market for industrial Ethernet devices is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 84.1 percent during the next five years. In the past two years, the market volume for industrial Ethernet devices has grown at higher than a 50-percent annual rate.

On top of the resilient design, the EDS-508 series provides both the ultra high speed recovery self-healing Ethernet ring technology (MOXA Turbo Ring that can recover your Ethernet backbone in only 300ms) and the Industrial Standard Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol- 802.1D/1w. The EDS-508 series is the first and only industrial Ethernet switch that implements both technologies. "Before Moxa entered the niche, Hirschmann Electronics and other companies provided only proprietary self-healing technology or Spanning Tree Protocol. Moxa is the only manufacturer to provide both. No matter how critical your network is, the EDS-508 series provides the most flexible solution for redundancy. It's also equipped with redundant DC24V power inputs." said Vincent Liu, the product manager of Moxa Technologies.

The EDS-508 family currently has three product members, the EDS-508, the EDS-508-MM-SC, and the EDS-508-SS-SC. The EDS-508 carries eight 10/100Base-T, the EDS-508-MM-SC carries six 10/100Base-T plus two 100Base-FX multi mode fiber optical uplinks; and the EDS-508-SS-SC carries six 10/100Base-T plus two 100Base-FX single mode fiber optical uplinks.

The Moxa EDS-508 Series features industrial-grade components, a compact size, passive cooling and relay output signaling and digital inputs for integrating important sensors. It is rated to operate at extreme temperatures (-40 to 75 degrees C), and designed to withstand extreme vibration and shock environments. Its compact size allows it to easily fit into industrial enclosures and cabinets.

"This rapid adoption of industrial Ethernet devices reflects an industry quickly shifting from proprietary, multiple-network environments on the factory floor to a single, standards-based Ethernet network," said Frank Yang, president and general manager for Moxa Technologies. "Our strength is to take advantage of the most complete IT manufacturing infrastructure in the world and utilize the network knowledge we have in Taiwan. That really helps the industrial market get affordable and excellent network products through our service. In general, we will offer better features but at only 2/3 price of other companies." said Frank Yang.

Price and Availability
The Moxa EtherDevice (TM) Switch EDS-508 Series is designed for use in factories and in utility, transportation and military settings, where temperatures, humidity, dust and vibrations are more extreme than they are in regular business environments. The Moxa EtherDevice (TM) Switch EDS-508 Series is scheduled to be made available on March 2004 and are priced from $950 to $2500 for different fiber optical uplinks.
