Reconnex Announces Standards-Based Approach to Email Gateway Integration; Brings Deep Content Awareness to Message Processing

Barracuda, IronPort, and Sendmail Are First MTA to Demonstrate Integration with Reconnex to Prevent Leakage of Intellectual Property and Confidential Data via Email

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 9 -- Reconnex, the experts in information protection, today announced a standardized approach for interacting with email gateways to prevent intellectual property (IP) and other confidential data from leaving corporate networks. Barracuda, IronPort, and Sendmail are the first Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) vendors certified by Reconnex, providing an integrated solution with the Reconnex iGuard to take advantage of its content-monitoring capabilities. By working with MTA providers, Reconnex is able to employ existing standards-based message handling mechanisms to add another level of security to organizations' existing email infrastructure.

Today, customers depend on gateway MTAs for high-throughput, reliable message processing functions such as inbound and outbound email routing, spam filtering and blocking, virus scanning, and keyword-based filters. The Reconnex iGuard brings deep content knowledge to these existing MTAs by using biometrics to discover known data-at-rest on the network and tag it for protection. The iGuard also performs real-time content monitoring of all data-in-motion on the network, including messaging traffic, to detect tagged data. Now when an email that requires content analysis hits the MTA, the MTA can pass the message content to the Reconnex iGuard for analysis, which uses the tags to determine if the message contains IP or private data. In real- time, the iGuard provides feedback on the content 'risk' of the message as well as recommended actions for the MTA to take -- such as block, re-direct, quarantine, encrypt, or archive -- before the message leaves the network.

A high-performance appliance that protects inbound and outbound traffic at gigabit speeds, the Reconnex iGuard allows enterprises to discover, monitor, and capture network events related to critical content. The iGuard also performs searches on this captured content to detect previously unknown security threats or do after-the-fact investigations. The iGuard is passively installed alongside the MTA; it is not installed in-line and does not disrupt the processing of normal mail flow. The Reconnex appliance performs content analysis based on policies defined on the MTA, eliminating another device that may affect normal inbound or outbound email communications. This flexible architectural approach allows the iGuard to perform content inspection only on traffic specified by the MTA, such as outbound emails to competitor domains, email messages sent to questionable international destinations, or emails containing attachments. The iGuard can also analyze inbound email or intra- office messages since this traffic may require the same level of content analysis and monitoring.

"There is a critical need for large organizations to automate the security around sensitive records on their network," said Richard Stiennon of IT- Harvest. "Technology partnerships are needed if outward bound content inspection is going to be available quickly to control network, application and messaging."

"We believe the best approach for protecting the vast amount of digital assets stored and sent around the network is to integrate Reconnex's content- aware technology with the products of leading infrastructure providers such as MTA vendors," said Faizel Lakhani, vice president of marketing at Reconnex. "The Reconnex iGuard appliance will add value to their solutions by becoming the 'brains' of the network. Our newly available standards-based approach for MTAs will bring content knowledge to all existing MTAs and help customers better protect their critical information."
