Lithonia Lighting Unveils the New Standard in Fluorescent Lighting
RT5(TM) Volumetric Recessed Lighting eliminates harsh shadows associated with parabolics; offers uniform, comfortable lighting while saving energy LIGHTFAIR
(April 12, 2005, New York, NY) - Imagine a recessed fluorescent lighting fixture that produces softer, more comfortable light while using less energy. RT5(TM) Volumetric Recessed Lighting, introduced today by Lithonia Lighting, uniformly illuminates the entire volume of space, eliminating harsh shadows, dark walls and the "cave effect" arising from the sharp cutoff of parabolics. Yet, this new lighting system uses up to 33 percent less energy than the industry standard for office lighting, an 18-cell, 3-lamp T8 parabolic fixture.
Featuring an innovative optical design and a unique lamp/ballast combination from OSRAM SYLVANIA, RT5 delivers high-quality lighting that fills a space with the right amount of light - an ideal solution for offices, hospitals, retail stores and other open-plan areas. In addition, the fixture's high efficiency can easily accommodate stringent energy regulations such as California's Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, and IECC. "RT5 represents a breakthrough in recessed fluorescent lighting because it fills the space with volumetric light while being efficient, affordable, and unobtrusive," explains Gary Trott, Director of Product Development for Lithonia Lighting's Fluorescent Group. "It is a new and highly effective way of managing light." In contrast, parabolic lighting delivers light primarily down to the workplane. Because of this, the light is harshly concentrated in some areas, while much of the volume of the space is left in the dark. RT5 Volumetric Recessed Lighting provides a uniform distribution of soft light, eliminating harsh overhead light and the dark spots associated with parabolics. "This volumetric distribution results in far more comfortable fixture and room surface luminance ratios," says Trott. "The soft illumination means eyes do not have to constantly adjust, which helps reduce strain and fatigue. By controlling the light at high angles, the RT5 minimizes direct glare and computer glare and makes the space feel more comfortable to work in." To achieve the proper balance of light, RT5 features a two-piece refractor system (patent pending) that uses a combination of diffusing film and precisely extruded prisms to efficiently diffuse light. The result is a low-brightness refractor that illuminates and complements the highly-reflective barrel, provides outstanding lamp obscuration, and creates a smooth distribution at all angles and distances.
The SYLVANIA PENTRON PREMIER(TM) lamp and ballast system contributes to the high efficiency of the RT5. The advanced T5 lamp provides the industry's highest efficacy when compared with standard T5 or T8 lamps. The ballast includes end-of-lamp-life sensing and stepped switching bilevel output. This combination helps make PENTRON PREMIER the first T5 system to achieve up to 100 lumens per watt. RT5 fixtures are available in 2'x4', 2'x2' and 1'x4' configurations.
