Real-Time Clock meets DRM requirements.

Press Release Summary:

With 64-bit serial number and binary counter that allows conversion to time-of-day and elapsed-time measurements, Model DS1372 real-time clock is suited for use in MP3/MP4/PMP players, PVRs, digital cameras, and POS terminals. It is available in RoHS-compliant, 8-pin µSOP package that is fully specified over -40 to 85°C operating temperature range. Designed for battery-backed applications in which low current consumption is critical, device consumes 450 nA (typ) at 3 V.

Original Press Release:

RTC with Binary Counter and Unique 64-Bit Serial Number Reduces Solution Component Count

The DS1372 is a real-time clock (RTC) with a unique 64-bit serial number.

This RTC enables designers to reduce system component count and use a less expensive processor.

The DS1372 is able to achieve this reduced component count by integrating a binary counter and a unique 64-bit serial number.

The DS1372 is ideal for use in MP3/MP4/PMP players, PVRs, digital cameras, and POS terminals.

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 9, 2007-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS1372 real-time clock (RTC) with a binary counter and unique 64-bit serial number for digital data applications. Digital rights management (DRM) software requires a time stamp for file downloads and a unique serial number for identifying an authorized player. The DS1372's integration of a binary counter and unique 64-bit serial number not only satisfies DRM requirements, but also enables designers to reduce system component count and use a less expensive processor. Offering both of these features in an 8-pin µSOP package, this RTC is ideal for use in MP3/MP4/PMP players, personal video recorders (PVRs), digital cameras, and point-of-sale (POS) terminals.

The DS1372's binary counter allows easy conversion to time-of-day and elapsed-time measurements. Additionally, the 64-bit serial number is factory-lasered into the device to eliminate the need for costly user programming and to prevent tampering with the serial number. Designed for battery-backed applications in which low current consumption is critical, the DS1372 consumes 450nA (typ) at 3V. The use of this low-power RTC in a typical battery-backed MP3 player enables the application to shut down the main processor to conserve battery life.

The DS1372 is available in an RoHS-compliant, 8-pin µSOP package that is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range. Prices start at $0.93 (1000-up, FOB USA).
