New OSHA - Compliant Kee Hatch(TM) Railing System Provides Fall Protection at Roof Access Points
(May - 2002) Kee Industrial Products, Inc. introduces the new Kee Hatch(TM) safety railing system to provide safe egress and ingress through roof-type access hatches and for protection of the roof opening while the roof hatch is open. The new Kee Hatch fall protection railing system meets OSHA Standard CFR 29 1910.23 and CFR 29 1910.27, the company states. In most situations, CFR 29 1910.23 requires that the exposed sides
of openings in floors or roofs have guardrail protection. When the hinged cover of an opening is in an upright, open position, there are exposed sides required to be protected appropriately.
The new Kee Hatch is constructed of standard pipe and Kee Klamp® slip-on pipe fittings, which are galvanized for corrosion resistance. According to Kee Industrial, there are seven different models of Kee Hatch available to meet a variety of installation and locale requirements. The guardrail system is said to exceed minimum strength requirements for railings, is unobstructed from top to bottom, and contains no sharp edges or snag points. The Kee Hatch system is easy to install, and requires no penetration of the roof membrane, so it is ideal for new construction or retrofit, the company states. It can be used in conjunction with the KeeGuard® fall protection guardrail system for flat roofs.
