Radiology Consultants of Iowa Leverages MedInformatix RIS to Manage 400,000 Exams Per Year with Integrated Billing

MedInformatix Solution in Use by Imaging Center and 14 Affiliated Hospitals - Easily Customizable RIS Solution is Meaningful Use Certified

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Radiology Consultants of Iowa, the largest private radiology practice in Iowa, satisfied their need for a modern RIS to replace their legacy system by selecting the MedInformatix Inc. Radiology Information System (RIS). Radiology Consultants of Iowa began using the MedInformatix RIS solution in September, 2011 in order to integrate billing, exam tracking, and scheduling for its own RCI Imaging Center and its 14 affiliated hospitals.

The RCI Imaging Center handles more than 400,000 exams per year and features full-service imaging including mammography, plain film, MRI, bone density testing, CT, thyroid therapy, and general radiology. The center performs 24/7 image reading that is not completed by outsourcers, all images are reviewed internally by RCI Imaging Center staff. The 14 hospitals affiliated with RCI also utilize MedInformatix for integrated billing management, which has seen a substantial improvement in remittance time.

The legacy system previously used by the RCI Imaging Center was setup in 1998, and did not have the necessary features that would allow the company to operate in the modern healthcare arena. After an 18-month discovery process, the MedInformatix single-platform RIS was selected. "We were not interested in companies that did RIS and simply acquired a billing component and tried to tie them together," noted Joe Moore, Chief Information Officer at Radiology Consultants of Iowa. "MedInformatix provided a more complete electronic record with a simpler and more intuitive interface. During our discovery, we also saw the rules changed for Meaningful Use for radiology systems. Since MedInformatix was a fully certified EHR, we had an added incentive for choosing their service."

RCI Imaging Center previously used a host-based printing system with exams where documents were printed and manually scanned into its picture archiving and communication system (PACS) in order for information to be attached to exams. After implementation with the MedInformatix RIS, the center now uses print-to-PACS, which generates a higher resolution image for the radiologist, enabling them to better interpret patient conditions and also improves staff efficiency.

RCI Imaging Center staff required several key customizations to the solution, including custom clipboards presented at the point of care. MedInformatix assisted with completing these customizations, with clipboard design based upon various roles, for example registration, modality, technologist, office worker, or billing. The company also utilizes the MedInformatix portals for patient communications and expedited physician referrals.

"Even though we have been live with the MedInformatix solution for less than two months, we already see efficiency gains," noted Mr. Moore. "For example, the integration with our PACS system removes a substantial amount of manual work. Other improvements in workflow occur at the point of care, where technologists can see a patient has checked in by seeing the color-coded work list powered by MedInformatix becomes populated."
