NAR-5520 - Portwell Optimizes Cost Effective 1U Communication/Network Security Platform

New NAR-5520 ideal for mainstream entry-level sector

2007-11-05 Taipei,Taiwan

Portwell Inc., a world-leading innovator in the industry of Communication/Network Security Appliances, has expanded the range of its energy efficient and cost effective 1U communication/ network security platform with the introduction of the new NAR-5520. NAR-5520 utilizes the power of the latest Intel® 945G Chipset to support LGA775 socket CPUs-such as the Celeron® D, Pentium® D, Pentium® 4 and the latest Core(TM) 2 Duo-to provide added advantages in the mainstream entry level sector. The NAR-5520 is an attractive proposition for customers who seek solutions with server class performance in a compact, competitively priced 1U rackmount. Its support of the Intel Core(TM) 2 Duo processor ensures cost-saving low energy consumption while providing high computing power.

Available now, NAR-5520 1U CA platform is the ideal solution for network security applications such as Enterprise Network Security, Firewall, WAN optimization, Anti-Virus server, Unified Threat Management, Media Gateway and Triple Play broadcasting for both the enterprise and medium-sized offices.

Lower thermal loading

"Support of NAR-5520 for LGA775 socket processors means support for both single and dual core CPUs, including the Core(TM) 2 Duo series with 65W TDP," says Carroll Chang, Product Manager of Advanced Product Research Dept., Portwell Inc.. "The low power consumption of C2D processor could ease thermal management when compared with the Pentium® D dual core, which draws 95 to 130 watts. This lower heat exchange results in greater efficiency, increased cost savings and a greater competitive edge for our customers."

"Using the 945G chipset means NAR-5520 can also provide support for EIDE and SATA 2.0 storage devices, including a hot plug function, a 1066/800/533 MHz FSB and dual-channel unbuffered 800/667/533 DDR2 RAM expandable to 4 GB," adds Carroll Chang.

Meeting mainstream demand

"With up to 6 PCI-E x1, RJ45 GbE and 4 PCI GbE ports (max. 10 GbE RJ45) available from the system board," continues Carroll Chang, "the new NAR-5520 more than meets the mainstream demand for 6 to 10 LAN ports, making it easier for customers to stay within budget. An additional low cost PCI base 4 or 2 port GbE add-on adapter solution is available to assist with system management. We've also included two built-in bypass segments for high availability (HA) and network fall-over/bypass functionality."

Increased performance, longer life, lower costs

Polo Huang, Assistant VP of Communication Appliance Business Unit, Portwell, Inc., confirms that Portwell integrated the Intel® 945G chipset into the new NAR-5520 in order to provide longevity support and enable its customers to offer a distinct price advantage to their clients.

"Today's mainstream and enterprise users alike demand high computing power and low energy consumption," Polo Huang explains. "They want cost effective, efficient computing platforms-particularly in the arena of network security and firewalls, where applications are mission critical, machines operate continuously and failure is not an option," he adds.

"Because more and more features were integrated in the application software, today's networks demand stronger computing power from multi-core technology. We've merged the multi-core processing capabilities of Intel's Core(TM) 2 Duo processors with the power and backward compatibility of the Intel® 945G chipset so we can help our customers address these computing challenges. We offer them significant performance and efficiency in the same package. And with the longevity of lifespan built into all Portwell products, the NAR-5520 is tomorrow's solution available today," Polo Huang confirms.
