Quickparts Plays Valuable Role in 2009 Inauguration by Providing Custom Parts for the NASA Lunar Rover
Atlanta, GA - February 19, 2009 - Quickparts (http://www.quickparts.com), one of North America's largest providers of custom designed parts, from rapid prototyping to production parts, announced today that they assisted NASA by creating custom parts for the Lunar Rover which was the grand finale at the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade.
The NASA contingent included the next-generation lunar rover that astronauts will use for future exploration of the moon. The parade traveled down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington on Jan. 20 following swearing-in ceremonies for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden.
In the year 2020, NASA will be back on the moon. This time NASA will explore thousands of miles of the moon's surface with individual missions lasting six months or longer. Just as we did during the Apollo program, NASA will be developing new concepts and technologies - concepts and technologies that will also benefit life on Earth.
Quickparts was able to create custom stereolithography (SLA) and cast urethane parts for the new Lunar Rover which was showcased by stopping and turning in front of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden as it closed out the ceremonial parade.
This small pressurized rover is about the size of a pickup truck (with 12 wheels) and can house two astronauts for up to 14 days with sleeping and sanitary facilities. It is designed to require little or no maintenance, and be able to travel thousands of miles climbing over rocks and up 40 degree slopes during its ten-year life exploring the harsh surface of the moon. The rover frame was developed in conjunction with an off-road race truck team and was field tested in the desert Southwest by driving on rough lava.
"We at Quickparts feel extremely honored to have been a part of such a historic event," said Ronald Hollis, CEO and President of Quickparts. "And we look forward to continuing our relationship with NASA and assisting them by creating parts that will change our world," he concluded.
