Quantum Integrates DLT-S4 Tape Drive Into Scalar Libraries

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 12 /- Quantum Corp. (NYSE:QTM), the leading global specialist in backup, recovery and archive, today announced the integration of its DLT-S4 tape drive within the Scalar® iPlatform(TM) architecture, beginning with the Scalar i2000 enterprise library. Quantum's DLT-S4 delivers the industry's highest available capacity tape and brings value-added manageability and security functionality that complement Quantum's embedded iLayer(TM) technology within the library. Quantum also announced key firmware enhancements for the Scalar i2000 which, together with the DLT-S4 integration, lower the total cost of ownership and reduce the amount of time enterprise customers spend managing the backup process.

By optimizing the integration of its tape libraries and tape drives across its broad product portfolio, Quantum provides unique value to customers of all sizes in meeting their backup, recovery and archive needs. This is particularly important in enterprise and midrange environments where customers face continued data growth, increased data retention and associated security concerns, and compliance demands -- all under constrained budgets.

"The addition of DLT-S4 tape drives within our Scalar iPlatform architecture further expands the range of leading tape technology choices for customers in demanding SAN-based enterprise and midrange data center environments," said Shane Jackson, director, enterprise product marketing for Quantum. "DLT-S4 offers the lowest cost per gigabyte of any tape storage available today, and the combination with the Scalar i2000 addresses the increasingly complex storage challenges of cost-effectively managing and protecting data."

DLT-S4 Integration in Scalar iPlatform

Designed to excel in demanding SAN-based data center environments, the DLT-S4 tape drive is well-suited to meet limited backup windows and critical restore time objectives. Within the Quantum Scalar automation platforms, DLT-S4 lowers the total cost of ownership through higher cartridge capacity, giving more value for each cartridge slot and reducing media management expenses. For example, customers can now receive up to 6.4 petabytes of storage in a single Scalar i2000 system.

The DLT-S4 features Quantum's award-winning DLTSage(TM) suite of intelligent data protection tools that includes DLTSage Tape Security and DLTSage WORM. DLTSage Tape Security prevents unauthorized access to data on tape cartridges and is particularly valuable in the event tapes are lost or stolen. When combined with the Scalar i2000, features such as the iLayer media integrity analysis aggregate and store data from the DLTSage tools over time so users can better monitor media history and manage use. DLTSage WORM is designed to meet the regulatory compliance requirements for unalterable long-term data storage, using a standard tape cartridge.

The DLT-S4/Scalar i2000 combination represents Quantum's latest major milestone in integrating product lines and programs since closing its acquisition of ADIC less than six months ago. In December Quantum introduced the DXi3500 and DXi5500 appliances, disk backup solutions incorporating data de-duplication and replication technologies. More recently, the company launched its new integrated Quantum Alliance(TM) channel program. Quantum also plans to incorporate DLT-S4 into the company's midrange Scalar i500 automation platform this summer.

New Features Available for Scalar i2000

The new enhancements to the Scalar i2000 firmware extend Quantum's iLayer technology, delivering: SSH, LDAP and SSL protocol enablement for enhanced data security; improved Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) trend reporting to allow backup administrators to more effectively manage the library; automated drive cleaning for better reliability and management; and a Java-based Web browser interface for simpler administrative access and greater ease of use. These firmware enhancements are free to customers with current service contracts.

The Scalar i2000 leverages the iPlatform architecture and iLayer technology to reduce the time users spend managing backup and eliminates the need for external library control servers by integrating advanced management functions inside the library. The Scalar i2000 also features library partitioning including mixed media, as well as support for SMI-S.
