Quad-Channel Transceiver offers built-in self-test via JTAG.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for use as general-purpose physical layer device (PHY) for proprietary backplanes, model FIN7216-01 offers operating range of 100 Mbps to 1.36 Gbps, redundant serial I/O, and ESD protection. Rated 2.2 W, true Quad Gbps PHY alternate source can operate at lower power when unused functions are disabled. Product withstands up to 2 KV to protect against potential chip- and system-level failure. Each of 4 channels may operate independently or aligned as one 32-bit parallel interface.

Original Press Release:

New Quad Gigabit PHY is First in Class to Offer Built-in Self-Test via JTAG; 25% Lower Power and 25X Faster Lock Time than Competitive Solutions

South Portland, Maine-January 26, 2003-Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE: FCS) introduces a new quad-channel transceiver designed to be used as a general purpose physical layer device (PHY) for proprietary backplanes or as a Fibre Channel or Gigabit Ethernet transceiver. The FIN7216-01 is the first-of-its-kind, true Quad Gbps PHY alternate source for existing applications while also offering significant technical features and advantages for new designs. As an alternate source, the FIN7216-01 offers a direct replacement for competitive devices while consuming considerably less power. In addition, the FIN7216-01 offers a broad operating range (100 Mbps to 1.36 Gbps) for greater system flexibility and higher throughput; fast lock time for more efficient switching setup; redundant serial I/O for higher reliability; and high ESD protection. The FIN7216-01 is also the first device of its kind to offer BIST through JTAG for simplified, in-system functional testing.

The FIN7216-01 is rated at 2.2W, 25% lower than comparable solutions, and can operate at even lower power when unused functions are disabled-a capability only offered on the Fairchild device. Its low power design generates less heat, simplifies board layout and lowers design costs by eliminating the need for a heat sink in most applications. The FIN7216-01 is tested and specified to withstand up to 2KV (Human Body Model), protecting against potential chip- and system-level failure. Each of the four channels on the device may operate independently or aligned as a single 32-bit parallel interface. The FIN7216-01 is packaged in a 256-pin, Thermally Enhanced Ball Grid Array (TBGA).

According to Mike Fowler, Fairchild's principal product strategist for Interface Products, "The FIN7216-01 delivers an enhanced alternative supply source that provides engineers with superior options in designing cost-effective proprietary switch fabric interconnect solutions."

Designs using the FIN7216-01 can be further optimized for thermal management and power efficiency through use of Fairchild's broad array of DC-DC conversion products, temperature sensors and cooling fan motor controllers.
