Spectra-Physics® Debuts Disruptive Cost-Performance Ultraviolet (UV) Q-switched Laser

• New Talon™ delivers unprecedented combination of UV performance, reliability, and cost

Santa Clara, CA — Spectra-Physics®, a Newport company, introduces Talon, a new family of UV and green Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers that takes cost-performance to new levels.  The new laser delivers exceptional performance: >12 W UV power, >240 µJ pulse energy, wide-repetition-rate range of 0 to 500 kHz, and excellent beam profile and stability.  Rugged and reliable for 24/7 operation over years, Talon enables new micromachining applications that require lowest cost-of-ownership with no compromise in performance.  It is ideal for applications such as PCB cutting and drilling, semiconductor, LED and ceramic scribing, thin-film patterning of ITO and solar cells, and glass cutting and drilling.

“Talon transforms the market for UV laser micromachining by delivering far and away the best combination of performance, reliability, and cost,” says Dave Allen, general manager and senior vice president for Spectra-Physics.  “Our customers clearly recognize the compelling cost-performance of Talon, and we are seeing incredible demand for these new lasers as we rapidly ramp volume production.”

Available in >12 and >6 W UV and >20 W green versions, Talon is an “It’s in the Box™” laser, combining power supply and laser head into a single rugged package, making it easy to integrate into machine tools and onto gantry systems.  Incorporating proven long-life components and state-of-the-art UV manufacturing processes, Talon has passed extensive environmental qualification testing.  Each laser is subjected to rigorous production tests to ensure high reliability for operation in demanding 24/7 applications.

Spectra-Physics’ new Talon laser will be featured at SPIE Photonics West, Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA, February 4-6, 2014. Please visit Spectra-Physics at booth #1301 for a demonstration. For more information, go to http://www.spectra-physics.com/Talon.
