PWM DC/DC Regulator provides 600 mA output current.

Press Release Summary:

Housed in 3 x 3 mm MLFTM and MSOP 10-lead packages, 2 MHz PWM DC/DC step-down regulators provide power to low-voltage chip sets in space-sensitive applications. Model MIC2202 synchronous buck regulator steps voltages down from 2.3-5.5 V input and operates with 1 µF ceramic output capacitor and 2.2 µH chip inductor. Model MIC2204, similar in function to MIC2202, operates with 4.7 µF ceramic capacitor and 4.7 µH inductor.

Micrel Releases 1uF Stable 2MHz PWM DC/DC Regulator

...MIC2202 operates with small 1uF ceramic output capacitor and 2.2uH chip inductor

...MIC2202 provides 600mA of current down to 0.5V output in 3mm x 3mm package

...can achieve over 95% efficiency across a wide load range

SAN JOSE, Calif. - (February 9 2004) - Micrel has released two new simple to use, small size, high efficiency, 2MHz PWM DC/DC step-down regulators housed in small 3mm x 3mm packages. The MIC2202 and MIC2204 are ideal for powering low voltage chip sets in space-sensitive applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, hard disk drives, IP phones, and 802.11 WLAN plug-in cards. Micrel Semiconductor (Nasdaq: MCRL), is an industry leader in analog, power management and high-speed communications integrated circuits.

The MIC2202 is a 2MHz synchronous buck regulator that steps voltages down from a 2.3V to 5.5V input. It features internal power MOSFETs that can supply 600mA of output current with output voltages down to 0.5V. The fast 2MHz operation along with a proprietary compensation scheme allows the smallest possible external components. The MIC2202 can operate with an L x C product of 2.2: 2.2uH inductor and 1uF ceramic output capacitor, or visa versa. Most competing solutions require 5 to 50 times greater output component values, adding size and cost to customer's systems.

"The MIC2202 is a small, simple, and efficient DC/DC solution for powering the latest generation chip sets in today's hand-held applications. The ultra-low external component values allow designers to use small, inexpensive ceramic capacitors and low DC resistance chip inductors in their circuits. The MIC2202 does not sacrifice noise or efficiency for size. A proprietary gate drive scheme allows over 95% efficiency across a wide 25mA to 200mA load range while maintaining low-noise constant-frequency PWM operation" says Tony Grizelj, Micrel's marketing manager for power products.

Along with the MIC2202, Micrel has recently released the MIC2204. The MIC2204 is similar in function to the MIC2202, and operates with a 4.7uF ceramic capacitor and 4.7uH inductor. The MIC2204 is a lower cost device that is suitable for applications that are not as space-constrained as those that suit the MIC2202.

The MIC2202 and MIC2204 are available in 3mm x 3mm MLFTM-10 and MSOP-10 package options. The MIC2202 is priced at $1.97 and $1.79 in 1,000-piece quantities, respectively. The MIC2204 is priced at $1.88 and $1.70 in 1,000-piece quantities, respectively. Samples are available from stock, and production quantities are stock to 12 weeks ARO.
