PWM Buck Regulator measures 3 x 3 mm.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for xDSL modems and satellite radios, Model MIC4722 MLF® PWM buck regulator features 2.7 MHz operating frequency that allows users to use combination of 470 nH inductor and 4.7 mF output capacitor in their application. Internal compensation allows for high transient response, while low resistance integrated p-channel MOSFET enables the chip to deliver up to 3 A. Output voltage can be adjusted down to 1 V and can operate with max duty cycle of 100% for use in low dropout conditions.

Micrel Rolls Out Company's Highest Frequency and Smallest Footprint 3A Non-Synchronous PWM Buck Regulator

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 30 / -- Micrel Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched the MIC4722, a 3 mm x 3 mm MLF® 2.7MHz 3A PWM buck regulator and the industry's highest frequency 3A device. The MIC4722 is the latest member of Micrel's MHz operating, small footprint non-synchronous buck regulator family that also includes the MIC2207 and MIC2208. The device targets applications that require high operating frequencies, such as the next generation xDSL modems and satellite radios. The entire family of solutions target applications in the broadband communication, low power FPGA, printer, HDD, multimedia set top box and other consumer electronics markets. The MIC4722 is available in volume and pricing starts at $1.70 for 1K quantities.

"The need for less expensive external components and smaller solution footprints continue to be key for designers across many applications and markets," noted Ralf Muenster, Micrel's marketing director for power products. "Micrel's MIC4722 buck regulator's industry leading 2.7MHz operating frequency allows customers to use the combination of a 470nH inductor and a 4.7mF output capacitor in their application, creating by far the smallest output filter combination available in the market today."

The MIC4722 features an ultra-fast operation and a proprietary internal compensation which allows for extreme transient response and the usage of the smallest and most cost-effective LC components in its class. A low resistance integrated p-channel MOSFET enables the chip to deliver up to 3A with more than 94 percent efficiency. The output voltage can be adjusted down to 1V and can operate with a maximum duty cycle of 100 percent for use in low dropout conditions. The P-MOSFET also does away with the need for a sense resistor to provide a current limit, consequently further reducing the need for external components.
