PVD-Coated Inserts speed metal cutting.

Press Release Summary:

Turning grades KC5010 and KC5025 are PVD-coated with Titanium Aluminum Nitride, which helps resist wear at cutting edge for machining of high-temperature alloys, stainless, and alloy steels. KC5010 uses 6% cobalt binder in substrate, offering deformation resistance for general-purpose and finish-turning applications. For more severe operations, KC5025 features 10% cobalt in base material to cope with extreme variations in cutting loads.

Upgraded Kennametal Inserts Slash Turning Cycle Times

Advanced PVD coating on popular grades KC5010 and KC5025 allows 100% increase in metalcutting speeds

(LATROBE, PA) - Kennametal Inc. announces a breakthrough in cycle-time reduction and improved wear characteristics for turning grades KC5010 and KC5025. Advanced PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating of TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) is showing increases in metalcutting speeds of up to 100% compared with conventional PVD-coated inserts. Current Kennametal KC5010 and KC5025 users are automatically upgraded to this latest technology. These grades are primarily applied in finish machining and general-purpose machining of high-temperature alloys, stainless, and alloy steels. In addition, they find uses in cast-iron and non-ferrous applications requiring keen cutting edges.

Kennametal's optimizing the aluminum content in the advanced PVD TiAlN coating greatly increases resistance to wear at the cutting edge. Both lab and field testing confirm this unique coating enables a 50 to 100% increase in surface speed. At the same time, there is no loss of tool performance at conventional speeds.

KC5010 uses a 6% cobalt binder in the substrate, offering excellent deformation resistance and reliable edge performance. General-purpose and finish-turning applications, without heavy interrupted cuts, call for this grade. For more severe operations, KC5025, with 10% cobalt in the base material, offers added toughness to the cutting edge to cope with extreme variations in cutting loads.

In a turning test cutting 316SS, the new KC5010 grade held its edge three times longer at a 50% increase in speed over the old benchmark with no changes in chip load or depth of cut. In another field test in which speed, feed, and depth-of-cut were left unchanged, the number of parts produced from a single cutting edge increased by a factor of 2.2 to 1.

Enhanced KC5010 and KC5025 grades are currently available in Kenloc,(TM) Screw-On, and Top-Notch(TM) Profiling turning inserts. In addition, these grades deliver the same top performance as all other offerings within the Kennametal grooving and cut-off line: Top Notch(TM) Grooving, A4 Groove & Turn System, A Deep-Grooving System, and A2 Cut-Off.
