Punching Tool Set can create bends up to 90°.

Press Release Summary:

Multibend forms bends up to 1 in. high and 2.1 in. long during punching process. Composed of punch, rotary bending insert, and spring-loaded insert, multi-lean tool reduces need for secondary equipment and processes. Programmability of punch head's ram gives unit ability to bend pre-processed areas and to set ram position and maintain control over tool penetration depth. Bends can be made at outside and inside contours on materials from 0.02-0.125 in. thick.

New Punching Tool Can Create Bends Up to 90 Degrees

TRUMPF Multibend tool reduces the need for secondary operations

FARMINGTON, Conn., February 5, 2003 - The TRUMPF Tooling department today announced the availability of an innovative new punching tool set, the TRUMPF Multibend. Designed to reduce the need for secondary manufacturing operations, the new Multibend tool gives fabricators the ability to form 90-degree bends during the punching process.

A Multi-Lean Tool
The Multibend tool fits in well among lean manufacturing initiatives. One of the tool's key benefits is that it reduces the need for secondary equipment and processes. As a punching tool that bends, the Multibend brings fabricators another step closer to performing start-to-finish fabrication on one machine.

Performing as many operations as possible on one machine saves production costs. Creating 90-degree bends on a punched part once had to be done off the punching machine. For the user, this entailed an extra work step at a bending machine -- which translated into additional costs per part.

A Higher Level of Tooling
Using this punching tool, fabricators can create 90-degree bends up to a height of one inch and a length of 2.1 inches. The programmability of the punch head's ram gives the Multibend the ability to bend pre-processed areas. The programmability feature allows users to set the ram position for clearance and maintain control over the tool penetration depth.

Bends can also be made with the Multibend at both outside and inside contours on materials from 0.02 to 0.125 inches thick.

How Does the Multibend Work?
The Multibend tool is composed of a punch, rotary bending insert, and spring-loaded insert. The punch and the bending insert are lowered onto the sheet and bending begins. The flange is overbent to about 92 degrees to compensate for material springback. Finally, the tool is raised and the 90-degree bend is complete.

The Multibend tool is one of the latest innovations in a long line of TRUMPF tooling. Currently more than 1,000 different types of punching tools are in stock at TRUMPF's Farmington, Connecticut facility.
