TC 5000 R Redefines Punching Productivity

FARMINGTON, Conn., November 12, 2001 - TRUMPF Inc. is introducing their new high-speed punching machine, the TRUMATIC
5000 Rotation (TC 5000 R) at the 2001 FABTECH International show.
Offering a positioning speed of 4600 inches per minute, a hydraulic punching head capable of a 1200 punching strokes per minute, and a 50-by-100-inch working range, the TC 5000 R is unrivaled in the CNC processing of materials up to 0.312 inches thick.

"Productivity and profitability go hand in hand," says Mike Morissette, punch product manager for TRUMPF Inc. "The TC 5000 R punching machine combines the best in productivity, efficiency and accuracy, with the flexibility to machine a wide range of material thickness."

With positioning speeds of 4600 inches per minute in materials up to 440 pounds, the TC 5000 R provides the highest speeds available in the market. The TC 5000 R's high rate of acceleration are achieved through new design features including:
* A weight-optimized coordinate guidance system
* A newly designed high-speed, single head punch design
* A lightweight tool cartridge
* A new drive configuration
* Lighter machine tables
* Automatic registration of sheet weight and tool quantity

Up to 32 percent of the machine's weight is reduced through the use of individual guide carriages coupled via the x- and y-rack. The resulting stiffness creates higher acceleration values while ensuring precision. The maximum acceleration values of the x-axis are more than twice that of the force of gravity (2g).

Another special feature of the TC 5000 R is the y-axis Gantry drive. Two separate, highly efficient motors are controlled synchronously and without a mechanical link. Simultaneous axis movement can achieve a speed of 4600 inches per min. In addition, racks and pinions interlocked at an angle provide greater stiffness for the drive system and improve the Gantry's ability to withstand stress. Another innovation, water-cooled drives, reduces heat buildup in the machine.

One particularly unique feature of TC 5000 R is an FEM calculated c-frame, designed to achieve maximum cross-stiffness. Greater work table stiffness ensures accuracy and minimizes tool wear.

A hydrostatic bearing in the newly redesigned punch head eliminates off-center strain. Due to the large number of strokes and the closed hydraulic loop, the TC 5000 R can perform beading at speeds close to the machine's maximum rated punching speed. Sensors monitor the rapid tool changes. For individual tools, the tool exchange time is less than 3 seconds, for Multitools® it takes only 0.7 seconds.

The punching head operates at up to 1200 punching strokes per min
(or 2800 strokes per min for engraving). The acceleration of the c-axis and its speed allows for 5.5 revolutions per second. This enables rapid contour machining and fast tapping.

"Combined with the shortest tool setup time in the industry, these features provide for true production times that outpace any
comparable punching machine," says Morissette.
