PerkinElmer Debuts Single-chip High Power Pulse Laser for Consumer, Industrial and Military Range Finders

New EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser Yields Same Power as Stacked Device In a Compact Package That Is Easy and Cost Effective for OEMs to Integrate

Nuremberg, Germany - May 10, 2005 - PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today introduced a new single-chip pulse laser at "Sensor + Test 2005" in Nuremberg, Germany. The EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser provides reliable high power output from a small beam size in a compact package, making it easy and cost effective for manufacturers to integrate the device into a variety of consumer, industrial and military range finding applications.

With typical peak power of 75 watts at 905 nm wavelength, PerkinElmer's innovative EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser provides the same power as a stacked device consisting of multiple laser chips - but in a single, monolithic chip with a small emitting area just 10 microns high. PerkinElmer has eliminated the stacking process by growing layers one over the other at the atomic level, such that electrical connections between the emitters are done within the chip vs. soldering different chips together. This process decreases emitting area size and optimizes optical power while reducing production costs, giving manufacturers a high performance solution in a compact package that is easy to integrate with smaller, more cost-effective optical components. Users can achieve the same amount of power in a much reduced space; alternatively, multiple EPI-Cavity chips can be stacked to maximize the power output for specific applications. PerkinElmer is able to offer devices with a range of emitting widths to optimize the diode for non-standard customer requirements.

"The new EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser continues our tradition of introducing new products with more power in smaller sizes at more affordable prices," said John Roush, President, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. "With more active layers on a single chip, the EPI-Cavity product provides more power and better control over the output with lower manufacturing cost. We are confident that PerkinElmer's single-chip pulse laser will help manufacturers bring new range finder solutions to market faster and more cost effectively."

NEW - Epi-Cavity Pulse Laser
The EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser is available in various package configurations, including plastic encapsulation, which is well-suited for commercial applications, and a hermetically-sealed metal package, which performs well in harsh environments.

While the military has used pulse lasers in range finders for many years, commercial applications are on the rise, including blind spot detectors, traffic flow monitors, traffic speed guns, adaptive cruise control systems, ceilometers and more. For most range finding applications, the EPI-Cavity Pulse Laser is the ideal complement to PerkinElmer's Epitaxial Silicon Avalanche Photodiode or EPI APD, part C30737, which provides the sensor functionality of the range finder.
