PTi Extruders to Demonstrate 'Dryer-Less' PET/PLA Sheet System at Upcoming Industry Conferences

AURORA, Ill. - Processing Technologies International (PTi), a leading global manufacturer of high-performance sheet extrusion machinery, will demonstrate its unique "dryer-less" HVTSE twin-screw sheet extrusion production system during the 20th annual SPE Thermoforming Conference Sept. 17-20 in Schaumburg, Ill. and following the Polyester Extrusion and Recycling Forum, sponsored by Kreyenborg Group, Oct. 11 in Chicago.

SPE conference attendees will have an opportunity to view the new production system during a plant tour and demonstration session Sept. 20 at PTi headquarters in nearby Aurora. In addition, attendees of the Polyester Extrusion and Recycling Forum can view the technology during an Oct. 12 open house at PTi headquarters, a day after the recycling event. Complimentary transportation to PTi headquarters will be available for both events.

The production-scale unit, which is capable of processing rates in excess of 2000 lb per hour (900 kg/hr), will run a variety of resins including post-consumer and industrial PET/PLA. The energy-efficient process relies on Italy's Luigi Bandera's patented High-Vacuum Twin-Screw Extruder (HVTSE) technology, which allows PET to be processed without the need for raw material drying and crystallizing. It employs a single atmospheric and dual high-vacuum, vent system with a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. This novel approach allows moisture and other volatiles to be removed as part of the extrusion process. In the case of recycled PET, the need for re-crystallization of the material is also eliminated. The energy savings from the elimination of drying and crystallization can approach 30-35% versus the conventional method.

PTi has a strategic business alliance with Bandera to market the technology in North America and has invested more than $3 million to install a production-scale unit for North American customers at its Aurora headquarters.

The annual thermoforming conference, sponsored by the SPE thermoforming division, will be held this year at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel. The event features the latest in thermoforming technology from the industry's leading experts. The four-day program includes technical/business sessions on tooling, machinery, materials, and processing; full-day workshops; company exhibits; and a parts competition. The Polyester Extrusion and Recycling Forum will focus on the key developments in equipment and processes relevant to the extrusion and polyester recycling sector. It will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Ill.
