The Anybus Communicator connects automation devices to Profinet

HMS Industrial Networks has extended their protocol converter family and announces the Anybus Communicator for Profinet. The Communicator is an intelligent protocol converter. It connects automation devices via their serial interface to Profinet. It allows devices without a built-in Profinet interface to be connected to Profinet networks. Typical applications are Profinet connections for barcode or RFID scanners, weigh scales, frequency inverters and motor starters.

The Anybus Communicator is a compact device for standard DIN rail mounting. In the Profinet network, the Communicator operates as a Profinet IO Device. The serial interface between the Communicator and the field device supports RS-232, RS-485 and RS-422 signal levels at baud rates of up to 57 kbit/s. For devices with an RS-232 interface, one Anybus Communicator is needed to connect one field device to Profinet. Using RS-485 interfacing, up to 31 automation devices can be connected via one Communicator to Profinet. The field devices will appear as one I/O device in Profinet. In this case, the cost of the Profinet connection can drop to less than 20 per device.

The serial interface of the Communicator supports the commonly-used Modbus protocol, but it can also be easily adapted to manufacturer-specific protocols using a Windows-based configuration program. To simplify troubleshooting of serial communication the product contains a built-in line listener at its serial port.

The Anybus Communicator also contains an integrated Webserver for settings and monitoring of data. In addition to Profinet, the Anybus Communicator is available for Ethernet/IP and Modbus-TCP as well as most of the popular field bus systems like Profibus, DeviceNet, Interbus, CANopen, Modbus, Lonworks, ControlNet, CC-Link and FIPIO. All versions work the same way and provide a flexible standard solution for connecting field devices to all popular industrial networks.
