Programmable Logic Controller extends communications options.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring CP 1542-5 communication processor that enables connection to Profibus networks, Simatic S7-1500 supports Profibus-DP master and slave functions according to IEC 61158/61784 as well as S7 routing. Security functions have been extended in CP 1543-1 communication processor used to connect to Industrial Ethernet networks; one provides additional encryption of data communicated to controller. In addition to access protection functions, CP 1543-1 offers stateful inspection firewall.

Original Press Release:

Extended Controller Communication

Nuremberg, Germany. The Siemens Industry Automation Division has developed a new Profibus module and extended the security functions in Simatic S7-1500 controller communication via Industrial Ethernet. The new CP 1542-5 communication processor provides a connection between smaller Profibus networks and Simatic-S7-1500 controllers, allowing, for instance, the creation of additional Profibus segments to relieve the S7-1500 CPU from communication functions.

CP 1542-5 supports Profibus-DP master and slave functions according to the international standard IEC 61158/61784 as well as S7 routing. Security functions have been extended in the CP 1543-1 communication processor used to connect Simatic S7-1500 controllers to Industrial Ethernet networks. One of these functions provides additional encryption of data communicated to the controller, thus protecting it more effectively against interception or manipulation. For this purpose, VPN(Virtual Private Network) connections are set up with the communication partner.

Encryption is based on the standardized IP-Sec protocol. In addition to the access protection functions in the form of password protection which is already supported by Simatic S7-1500 CPU, CP 1543-1 offers a stateful inspection firewall for accessing the S7-1500.
