Invensys Extends Field Device Integration Capabilities with New Profibus Support for I/A Series A² System

Foxboro remote I/O capability maximizes the benefits of HART, FOUNDATION fieldbus, FoxCom, and now PROFIBUS field communications

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (ISA CONFERENCE & EXPOSITION) -- October 21, 2002 - Invensys announces a new PROFIBUS interface for the Foxboro I/A Series A² automation system. The interface provides users with a very cost efficient option for seamlessly integrating PROFIBUS DP slave devices into the system.

The rugged I/A Series Fieldbus Modules and Foxboro's exclusive redundant high-speed Ethernet fieldbus network maximize the benefits of PROFIBUS and other smart field protocols by providing users with the option of securely distributing the system I/O remotely in the field to dramatically reduce their field wiring costs.

"Installing the PROFIBUS communications on our I/A Series system made the whole process more efficient and reduced operating costs as well," said David Poole, Process Control Engineer at Mitsubishi Films, Greer, SC. "From a single interface, we can now access the complete range of temperature, pressure or other data the process control system is collecting. With our previous analog devices, we would have to have to wire directly for each reading we wanted. By eliminating need for direct wiring and having greater flexibility in deploying field devices we have already saved about $300,000 on one project alone."

"The new PROFIBUS modules provide I/A Series users with one more option to implement the production line that is right for their business," said David Shepard, vice president, I/A Series platform marketing. "Users can chose PROFIBUS, HART, FOUNDATION fieldbus, and/or FoxCom intelligent devices based on the strengths of each and the unique requirements of their application. We are pleased to offer so many fieldbus options, powerful configuration tools, and upgrade capability to make their jobs even easier."

The new PROFIBUS Fieldbus Modules operate in conjunction with the I/A Series Control Processor 60 to provide real-time access to process data and status, plus access to field device parameters and diagnostics to support configuration, maintenance, and asset management applications. Each Fieldbus Module channel provides two PROFIBUS channels.

The new I/A Series Fieldbus Modules for PROFIBUS communications can also be purchased on-line at www.iastore.com.

ABOUT THE I/A SERIES A² SYSTEM
The ground-breaking I/A Series system from Foxboro was the first open automation system to leverage the latest standard technologies to help improve plant performance, maximize interoperability, and avoid future obsolescence.

Thanks to continuous innovation and a firm commitment to preserving customers' investment in hardware, software, training, and intellectual property, I/A Series systems and customer applications implemented more than a decade ago are just as viable today as when they were first installed. With thousands of I/A Series systems installed in plants around the world - from small, highly regulated batch plants to the world's largest power plants, pulp and paper mills, refineries, and petrochemical complexes - the I/A Series system is clearly the most proven and reliable, continuously supported control system available.

Recently announced I/A Series A² system enhancements (the A² designation indicates "Architecture by ArchestrA") include new fault-tolerant 1 Gigabit Switched Ethernet communications technology, new I/A Series workstations on both Windows XP and Solaris 8 (Unix) platforms, and new ArchestrA-enabled applications. These, and other soon-to-be-announced system enhancements will enable I/A Series users to continue to leverage the latest open technologies into the foreseeable future to continuously improve the performance of their plants.
