Original Press Release:

IBM eServer i5 520 with New POWER5 Technology -- Simplifies Your IT Infrastructure

Overview

The IBM eserver i5 is the next generation iSeries(TM) ... the industry's first POWER5(TM) processor-based server.

The 520 uses i5/OS V5R3, an integrated operating system that builds on and extends the capabilities of OS/400®.

The eserver i5 520 can help reduce complexity, simplify your IT infrastructure and help you regain control of your increasingly complex business.

The 520 is built on IBM's 64-bit processor technology. It is one of the industry's most powerful and flexible servers. The 520 is offered with one or two processors with performance ranging from 500 to 6,000 CPW.

Delivering a breakthrough in infrastructure simplification, the 520 is capable of running i5/OS, Microsoft(TM) Windows(TM), Linux, and AIX® 5L applications simultaneously on a single server and can integrate IBM's eserver xSeries® servers running Windows. Refer to the Product Previews in Hardware Announcement 104-160, dated May 4, 2004, for more information.

The 520 can dynamically distribute processing resources where you need them most, raising server utilization rates and helping improve productivity. Instead of dedicating storage to each server or managing a complex SAN, you can simply share a single storage pool, with one approach to managing resources and backup. With a high bandwidth network inside the 520, you can communicate securely between applications without dedicating expensive network devices.

The eserver i5 520 Editions include some of the base software your business needs, starting with i5/OS security and workload management tools, plus the industry standards-based DB2® Universal Database® (UDB) database.

WebSphere® Application Server for Web serving and Lotus® Workplace portal product for e-mail and instant messaging are two other integrated software offerings associated with eserver i5 Editions.

The 520 provides an integrated set of hardware capabilities including two 1 Gbps Ethernet LAN ports and a disk drive controller in the base, saving you additional cost and PCI slots. In addition to the deskside/tower configuration option, the Model 520 can be placed in a standard 19-inch rack.
