Rockwell Automation Expands Capabilities of Allen-Bradley® ProcessLogix(TM) System With New Optional Components

New interface modules and software enhancements increase application flexibility, reduce design and installation costs

MILWAUKEE, August 26, 2002 - Complete automation leader Rockwell Automation has introduced several enhancements to its Allen-Bradley® ProcessLogix(TM) distributed process control system that speed application development and help reduce engineering time and costs. These new enhancements build upon existing networking and communication capabilities designed to increase production efficiencies through improved plant-wide connectivity.

"Most industrial process control applications call for a number of common elements, such as communication protocols and control algorithms," said Chuck Hoover, ProcessLogix product manager, Rockwell Automation. "With its highly integrated, modular design, the ProcessLogix system offers built-in and optional components that minimize the amount of system building required. This lets users concentrate on the application, not the integration."

New ProcessLogix components include:

Remote I/O Communications Interface Module. The 1757-ABRIO module allows ProcessLogix and ControlLogix(TM) controllers to communicate with existing Allen-Bradley 1771 Remote I/O. Acting as a scanner, the module automatically scales raw I/O data and converts it into user-defined floating point or text values. This saves engineering time and costs by simplifying incoming analog signals. The module also manages and performs block transfers with supported 1771 Remote I/O modules and provides full diagnostic counters for alarms and maintenance. The module supports up to 32 adapters with any mix of full or partial racks.

The 1757-ABRIO module allows end users with a large installation of 1771 style I/O to easily and cost-effectively upgrade their control processors. The scanner module also scales and configures the raw input/output data, eliminating the need for programming code in a controller to perform this task. Data received by the controller is the desired process value (i.e. measured value, setpoint, output).

10/100 Ethernet Bridge Module. ProcessLogix users can now use Rockwell Automation's 1756-ENBT 100 Mbps Ethernet Bridge Module in their process control applications. The new Ethernet Bridge Module enables ProcessLogix users to take advantage of increased performance and bandwidth for control applications on the open Ethernet networking specification. The 100 Mbps Ethernet modules can be used in conjunction with the 10 Mbps products, so users don't have to eliminate their existing modules to use the higher-speed devices.

Redundant ProcessLogix OPC Server. Designed for redundant ProcessLogix applications, the new 1757-REDPLXOPC software component allows OPC client machines to access redundant ProcessLogix Servers across the network. The redundant ProcessLogix OPC Server software transparently determines which server is the primary and serves the latest data to OPC clients. This saves configuration time, improves data accuracy and provides the OPC with a transparent connection to the redundant server pair.

Foundation Fieldbus Linking Device. The 1788-CN2FF linking device and 1788-FFCT configuration software have been enhanced to increase response time to device monitoring. This is available as new firmware to the linking device and a new version of software.

System Redundancy Cable. A new 1757-SCR100 system redundancy cable for use with ProcessLogix and ControlLogix systems is now 100 meters long. The 100-meter redundancy cable gives users greater control reliability in redundant systems by expanding the network geography in applying separate, redundant controllers.
