Process Control System combines "snap-together" modules.

Press Release Summary:

Pre-configured with "snap-together" pneumatic modules, the AirLINE system consists of a Burkert pneumatic basic module, Phoenix Contact inline electronic modules and high-performance 10 mm multi-way solenoid pilot valves. It permits pneumatic actuators and electrical I/O to be controlled from the same device, on the same "rail-mount" assembly, using fieldbus communications, including Profibus DP, DeviceNET, InterBus-S and Ethernet.

New AirLINE Modular Process Control System Combines Burkert Pneumatic Actuation, Phoenix Contact I/0 and Fieldbus Communication in a Single Module

Flexible for different remote devices and Fieldbus Communication, the Burkert Type 8644 creates an integrated, extremely compact process actuation and 1/O control platform with easy Ethernet connectivity.

Irvine, CA, October 19, 2001 - Burkert and Phoenix Contact Announce a Strategic Marketing Agreement for the AirLINE Type 8644 remote process actuation and control system which offers an outstanding combination of ON/OFF or continuous valve functionality, electronic input and output, and fieldbus communication all in a single "rail mount" assembly. Featuring a space-saving, modular "snap together" design, AirLINE allows for fully customized, pre-wired and pre-tested solutions that exactly meet customers' and system integrators' requirements for size, flow and performance with modular control assemblies.

Developed especially for use within the process control industry, AirLINE permits pneumatic actuation from Burkert and electrical I/O from Phoenix Contact to be controlled from the same device, on the same "rail mount" assembly. This innovation in combined pneumatic and electrical connectivity provides significant benefits requiring less cabinet space, greatly reduced wiring, less weight and lower total costs, with improved control functionality.

An integrated Fieldbus coupler provides communication flexibility between the AirLINE system and complex process control devices. Fieldbus interfaces supported include PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNET, lnterBus-S and Ethernet.

AirLINE supports virtually any process field device, whether pneumatic or electronic (digital or analog). System integrators can specify a customized valve actuation solution for applications in the water treatment, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, biotech, pulp and paper processing, textile, chemical or semiconductor industries. AirLINE integrates established remote I/O technologies into Burkert's control strategy, based on the concepts of Easy LINK and Easy NET. This further ensures high application flexibility, coupled with significantly lower system operating costs.

Flexible Combination of Pilot Valves, Phoenix Contact I/0 Modules & Fieldbus Connectivity Pre-configured with "snap together" pneumatic modules, the AirLINE system consists of a Burkert pneumatic basic module, Phoenix Contact inline electronic modules and high-performance 10mm multi-way solenoid pilot valves. Burkert pilot valve Types 6524 (3/2 way) and 6525 (5/2 way) consist of the proven Burkert pilot rocker principle and a pneumatic seat valve. The rocker principle utilized in these valves is superior to spring plunger technology and has proven durability for over 100 million cycles.

These valves allow high flow rates of 300 liter/min, fast response times, operate on pressures up to 100 PSI and require less power consumption. Pneumatic valve actuation modules include left and right connector modules, end modules and intermediate supply modules. All are available with or without manometer in either threaded port or push- in connections. Depending on the pneumatic modules selected (2x wide or 8x wide), the dimensions of this AirLINE system range from 1 in. to 3.64 in. wide x 4.8 in. high x 2.86 in. long. Operating voltage is 24V DC.

Simple Fieldbus Connectivity
The Phoenix Contact I/O system consists of digital input and output blocks, analog input and output blocks and a Fieldbus coupler, which works with either PROFIBUS, DeviceNET, Ethernet or Phoenix Contact InterBus Inline systems currently in use. I/O capability supports nearly any process field device including limit and position switches, motor controls, and all types of Burkert fluid control sensors/transmitters including flow, level, pressure, temperature and analysis. These modules allow both digital and analog I/O ranging from 2 to 8 channels each. Easy Ethernet Connection to International Network Standard I/Os and field devices may be flexibly and easily connected to the international network standard IEEE 802.3 using the Phoenix Contact Ethernet head station FL IL 24 BK InterBus. The existing Ethernet infrastructure in a process plant is used to connect local I/O clusters, enabling functional units such as digital and analog inputs and outputs, counters, power switches and Burkert pneumatics to be combined in a highly modular way.

Custom Systems with Easy NET Contribute to Lowest Cost of Ownership In addition to saving space, the AirLINE system cuts costs by combining sensor, valve, control and communication functions with a direct connection to the process control system via Burkert's Easy NET. This design provides both decentralized intelligence and straightforward networking between all industry-standard devices in the system. Burkert "Easy' networking can reduce total system cost of ownership by as much as 40%.
