Precast Modular Structure Meets Police/Fire College's Explosive Requirements

The Ontario Police & Fire Marshal College in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada is best known for its comprehensive program to prepare police and fire professionals to safely and effectively perform their duties.

As part of the program, the College looked to construct a special burn cell training and testing structure that would facilitate burn and explosives testing and intensive cadet training.  However after considerable evaluation, officials found that conventional building methods and materials either did not meet the internal pressure and fire rating requirements or exceeded the budget allotted for construction.

Instead, the College looked to Hy-Grade Precast Concrete's precast modular building systems.  The Hy-Grade team worked closely with officials from the College to design a customized Easi-Span Precast Concrete Modular Building structure that could meet the facility's requirements and budget.

They decided on a 24-ft wide x 40-ft long x 10-ft high building with precast concrete walls, a precast post-tensioned roof and floor, 5 fire-rated single man doors, 1 3-hour fire-rated overhead door and 8 special blast and fire resistant windows.  The sloped floor slabs incorporate floor drains while the interior walls are made of smooth, troweled natural concrete. The exterior of the precast structure is a multi-finish of simulated ashlar stone/revel/simulated smooth block. The entire pre-engineered structure is designed to resist 114-lbs/sq ft internal pressure at a 3-hour fire resistance rating and it is modular for future relocation if required.

The building was shipped to the College as prefabricated slabs and panels, and assembled on site.  In advance of site assembly, the Hy-Grade crew underwent full police background checks due to the restrictive, high security nature of the facility.

Hy-Grade Precast Concrete is a family-owned precast concrete company, started in 1948. The company has been an Easi-Set producer since the 1980s and has designed, produced and supplied close to 2,000 buildings throughout Canada and Western New York.
