"One piece or "monolithic construction" is a tremendous advantage in precast steps because there is no possibility for snow or ice to intrude into the step and compromise its' strength and longevity which can occur with steps made from wood or masonry brick steps," says Step Guys sales manager Brian Brown.
In winter, precast steps should be shoveled or swept to be kept free of snow but the accumulation and melting of snow and ice will not harm them. Sand may be applied to add traction. Salt should not be used on precast steps as it may cause spalling and pop-outs. The use of deicing compounds deemed to be safe by their manufacturers for use on quality precast steps still subject the concrete to many more freezing and thawing cycles than would occur naturally. Deicer use on precast steps should be kept to a minimum and any deicer residue left on the precast steps should be immediately shoveled or swept off the precast steps once the ice has melted. It is best to avoid the use of any deicers when the steps are less than 1 year old.
