Pre-Assembled Cartridges speed oligonucleotide synthesis.

Press Release Summary:

StratoSpheres(TM) DNA Synthesis Cartridges produce small to medium sized oligonucleotide strands required for use in DNA amplification, sequencing, and hybridization. Polystyrene packing provides high-throughput synthesis capabilities, while hydrophobic nature promotes production efficiency by maximizing yield of full length product. Two synthesis scales, 40 and 200 nmol, enable biochemists to make oligonucleotides in various lengths to meet exact needs.

Varian, Inc. Introduces High Quality, Economical Oligonucleotide Synthesis Solution for Genomics Research

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 19 -- Varian, Inc. (NasdaqGS: VARI) announces the release of new StratoSpheres(TM) DNA Synthesis Cartridges. These cartridges enable high throughput synthesis of high quality oligonucleotides.

Using automated instruments, small to medium sized oligonucleotides are synthesized in vast numbers across the world for use in DNA amplification, sequencing and hybridization. These techniques require a short oligonucleotide strand as a starting point. StratoSpheres DNA Cartridges produce these strands quickly, efficiently and economically.

Synthetic DNA oligonucleotides are easy to construct with these cartridges. The polystyrene packing of the StratoSpheres cartridges delivers significantly more product than conventional controlled-pore glass supports. In addition, the hydrophobic nature of the polystyrene increases production efficiency, maximizing yield of full length product. The cartridges deliver very economical oligo synthesis, improving productivity for high throughput laboratories.

Two synthesis scales, 40 nmol and 200 nmol, enable biochemists to make oligonucleotides in a variety of lengths to meet their exact needs. The convenient, pre-assembled cartridges are in an easy-to-use format and slot straight into standard oligonucleotide synthesizers.

"Investigation of genes as predictors of disease is of increasing importance," said Martin O'Donoghue, Senior Vice President, Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "StratoSpheres DNA Synthesis Cartridges can make a valuable contribution in this challenging arena by improving throughput and reducing costs."

The StratoSpheres product line encompasses a wide variety of polymer-supported reagents, catalysts, scavenger resins and synthesis supports. Varian's extensive range of complementary BioSolutions products includes cartridges and HPLC columns for analysis and purification.
