Potentia Semiconductor Launches the World's First Configurable Power Subsystem Controller With an Integral Data Link to a Primary Side Power Management IC

Configurable power controller maximizes system availability

OTTAWA, Canada, Nov. 29 - Potentia Semiconductor, the power management company, today announced the introduction of its configurable PS-2406 power subsystem controller. The new IC provides comprehensive power management of up to four secondary side DC-DC power converters and is the first of its kind to offer a serial data link to the company's range of primary side power management ICs.

The PS-2406's ability to monitor and act on power system information from both sides of the high-voltage isolation barrier enables designers to maximize system uptime in networking and high-availability compute and storage applications.

The PS-2406 provides all the functionality required to sequence, monitor and accurately trim customer-specified DC-DC power converters and to handle power system fault conditions. Using the integral PI-Link(TM) isolated communications interface, the PS-2406 can receive primary side voltage, current and fuse status information from devices such as Potentia's PS-1006.

In addition, in the event of an unrecoverable secondary side fault, the PS-2406 can instruct the PS-1006 to shut down the intermediate bus DC-DC power converter, thereby protecting the card from any further damage.

"The introduction of the PS-2406 power subsystem controller provides our customers the essential link they need to easily integrate primary side power management into their on-board power architecture," said Ian McGill, Vice President Business Development and Marketing. "With our new PI-Link(TM) enabled products, Potentia continues its commitment to transforming power system design."

The PS-2406 can be configured to distinguish between power system warnings and faults. Using this information, systems are able to maximize uptime by taking action before an impending fault results in system downtime. To further improve uptime the controller can also be configured to restart automatically following a momentary shutdown.

PS-2406 configuration data is stored in the device's non-volatile on-chip memory via its I2C interface or JTAG port. In normal operation configuration data and monitored power rail voltages are readily accessible through the I2C interface, through which power sequencing can also be controlled. When used with a primary side monitor IC, primary side data is also available with the same I2C interface.

The 48-pin QFP packaged PS-2406 also provides four general purpose I/O pins. Able to be mapped as hardware enable inputs or Power Good outputs, these can be allocated to any of the four monitored power rails or to the intermediate bus. They can also be configured to indicate primary side status reported by the PS-1006.

Like all of Potentia's power subsystem controllers, the PS-2406's overvoltage and undervoltage levels, startup and shutdown thresholds, sequencing delay and trim values are easily configured using Potentia's intuitive, point-and-click PowerCenter Designer(TM) software. Hardware designs, using the customer's choice of DC-DC power converters, can be validated under live load using Potentia's PowerCenter Emulation Platform.

Pricing and Availability
Potentia Semiconductor's PS-2406 is now available at a price of $4.60 in quantities of 10K units. For more detailed pricing information please contact info@potentiasemi.com .
