Emerson Network Power Introduces Liebert IP Telephony Availability System

Online double-conversion power protection is key to ensuring high availability of IP telephony equipment

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 27, 2004 - Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR), today introduced the Liebert IP Telephony Availability System, a complete power protection solution designed to deliver maximum availability of IP telephony equipment on the network edge.

The Liebert IP Telephony Availability System brings data center-level power protection and support to server closets and other network edge locations in branch office and remote sites, while simplifying the installation of IP telephony devices. It helps enable IP telephony applications to achieve the same reliability as the traditional phone systems being replaced by integrating an online double-conversion UPS system, remote monitoring and management, and local service and support into a single solution.

"When a company implements IP telephony, they expect to realize the cost efficiencies the technology enables without compromising their traditional high level of telephone system reliability," said Tom Valovic, IP Telephony Program Director at IDC. "An online double-conversion UPS system can be a critical element in ensuring that level of reliability."

The initial configuration of the Liebert IP Telephony Availability System is designed to support any stackable Cisco switch or router. Local Liebert representatives can tailor the system to other equipment. Local representatives also provide the installation support and maintenance services required to sustain high levels of equipment availability.

"This system will make it easier for us to develop and deploy IP telephony," said David Whitney, Regional Manager for the Colorado Division of Flair Data Systems, a certified Cisco partner that has been deploying IP telephony solutions since 1998. "Liebert understands what it takes to protect mission critical systems, and this new IP Telephony Availability System gives us a single part number for a complete, best-of-breed power protection solution tailored specifically to the requirements of IP telephony."

The Liebert High Availability Telephony System features a Liebert UPStation® GXT2 UPS system. With capacities from 700VA to 6kVA in 2U and 4U sizes, the UPStation GXT2 is ideal for network edge applications. Its online double-conversion topology is essential to delivering the power protection and battery runtimes required to support IP telephony applications.

Alternate approaches to protection, such as UPS systems with a line-interactive topology, have proven ineffective at protecting high-speed switches and routers. Not only do they fail to protect against the full range of power problems, they can actually cause shutdowns and packet loss when switching to battery, which they must do to condition incoming power. This also has the effect of reducing the battery capacity available during outages because battery capacity is used to support daily operation. Online double-conversion systems provide power conditioning without using UPS battery capacity, preserving battery capacity for outages.

The Liebert IP Telephony Availability System also includes a maintenance bypass to provide uninterrupted operation of protected equipment during UPS service. An OpenComms Web card provides remote monitoring of UPS status while enabling remote restart of protected equipment. All components are packaged in a compact, lockable enclosure that also houses the device being protected. The enclosure is available in wall-mount and floor-mount configuration. The system can be configured with up to four hours of battery runtime.

"The long-term success of IP telephony depends upon its ability to deliver the same level of reliability as the traditional phone network, and that makes power protection a key component in every IP telephony application," said Kevin McCalla, Director of Marketing at Liebert. "No one has more experience protecting systems in the data center than Liebert, and we've applied this experience, along with the input of our customers and channel partners, to create a complete solution to the challenge of supporting mission-critical devices on the network edge."

Liebert also provides IP telephony availability solutions for the data center and the desktop. For more information about Liebert solutions for IP telephony or any other Liebert products, visit www.liebert.com or call 1-800-877-9222.
