Zultys Announces Industries First 48 Port Power Over Ethernet Switch with 48 Vdc Input

EPS48 supplies power for 48 IP devices and eliminates mid-span products.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., 30 August 2004 - Zultys Technologies today announced the release of the EPS48. This switch has 48 10/100 Ethernet ports and two 1 Gb/s fiber ports. It provides industry standard power over Ethernet (PoE) on all copper ports. As with everything that Zultys manufactures, this product fully embraces open standards and therefore supports IEEE 802.3af.

The EPS48 can be used to power devices such as IP telephones, keyless entry systems, security cameras, and WiFi access points. The EPS48 is connected to any -48 volt supply such as the BPS12. By using the combination of an EPS48 and a BPS12, such devices will remain powered in the event of failure of the ac power. The BPS12 is a rack mounted battery system that Zultys introduced in November 2003.

"Although Zultys concentrates on IP telephony, the switching features in the EPS48 match any comparable product on the market," said Patrick Ferriter, VP of product marketing at Zultys. "The product is easy to manage and configure through a Windows based interface, so administrators can turn this up quickly, just as they do with our other family of products."

Traditional telephone systems continue to operate in the event of ac power failure. With IP phone systems, the phones are normally powered by an ac power adapter and when the ac fails, the phone cannot function. Using the BPS12 with the EPS48, the system administrator can choose which IP phones will continue to operate, and by proper scaling, for how long. One BPS12 can provide backup time for 48 phones, such as the Zultys ZIP 4x4, for one hour. The system administrator can obtain longer backup by either deploying multiple BPS12s or by selectively disabling power on some Ethernet ports.

"This product is long overdue in the marketplace," said Greg Still, managing partner of Xiologix, a value added reseller in Tualtin, Oregon. "For us, the EPS48 will be an essential component of any IP telephony deployment. This once again shows that Zultys is on the ball in developing products that address the real needs of the IP telephony market."

Pricing and Availability:

Pricing for the EPS48 is $4,500 and the BPS12 is $2,000. The EPS48 is one rack mounting unit (RU) high and the BPS12 is 3RU. Each is available through certified Zultys resellers around the world.
