New CoEv Magnetics DZM Series Power Inductors Offer Higher Power Handling Capability

Ideal for Switching Power Supplies and Portable Electronics

MENLO PARK, Calif.-June 17, 2004- CoEv Magnetics, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, announces its new DZM Series of lead-free power inductors. The low-voltage, high-current inductor is designed for switching power supplies and portable electronics. Unlike other low-profile inductors, the DZM inductors are free from thermal aging effects of standard iron powders, offer increased energy storage, are lead-free, and RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) compliant. The low profile and improved DC bias performance of the DZM inductors allows design engineers to increase power handling and performance of their products, without sacrificing valuable board space.

The design of the DZM Series reduces failure modes often found with plating and solder terminated wires and leads while minimizing contact resistance. The unique multi-gap technology used to manufacture the device also reduces fringing flux and stray field emissions. The core material is specially formulated to avoid thermal aging, minimize core loss, and provide a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of greater than one million hours of operation.

The DZM inductor filters and smoothes AC ripple current in DC circuits utilizing a 200°C insulation system and is well suited for operating in environments with a -40°C to 155°C temperature range, such as laptops, power converters, and portable electronics. The DZM series, which is an extension of the DXM family, is designed to handle higher currents, up to 50A, with inductance ranges of 0.105H to 3.0 5H and are available in the same 13mm x 13mm x 6.0mm package size as the DXM inductors.

"The DZM series of inductors allow design engineers to increase power density, further optimizing their switching power supply design," said Matt Chamberlain, Marketing Manager for CoEv Magnetics. "The device's small size, low resistance, high frequency performance, reduced roll-off at high currents and resistance to thermal aging make it suitable for laptops, Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs), Point of Load (POL) supplies, and other extreme environments."
