Micrel Targets Telecom and Networking Applications with High-Voltage Hot-Swap Power Controllers/Sequencers

o Provides for safe insertion/removal of line cards from live backplanes
o Output current regulation with time-out minimizes inrush current and false circuit-breaker trip

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (February 10, 2004) - A new family of eight, highly integrated, hot-swap power controllers, designed specifically for telecom, networking, and datacom line card applications, is now available from Micrel Semiconductor (Nasdaq: MCRL), an industry leader in analog and power management integrated circuits.

Operating from -19V to -80V with 100V surge protection, these new controllers/sequencers will be of great interest to systems designers looking to incorporate the latest available hot-swap device technology.

Manufactured in 14-pin SOIC packages, the MIC2589 and MIC2595 are designed to control an external N-channel MOSFET to provide inrush-current limiting and over-current protection with a minimum of external components. In addition, each device provides separate "Power-is-Good" control outputs for multiple DC-DC power converters. These output signals are time staggered, a feature that is programmable by an external capacitor. Both devices also offer the ability to detect an output no-load condition for which the no-load timeout delay is also programmable by an external capacitor.

System reliability and flexibility are both increased since the system designer can optimize several key parameters including input undervoltage lockout, input overvoltage protection, in-rush overcurrent protection, overcurrent timeout, open-load detection timeout and "Power-is-Good" sequencing delays. In addition, the devices regulate the output current to ensure inrush currents are controlled regardless of the amount of load
capacitance.

The MIC2595 and the MIC2595R also provide the system design engineer with the ability to program any amount of input undervoltage lockout hysteresis (or ON-OFF threshold control) complying with ANSI standards.

The MIC2589R and the MIC2595R simplify fault management as they
incorporate an auto-retry feature that will continue to attempt to restart the load in the event of a fault condition.

These products were specifically designed to address existing and emerging telecom and networking line card applications by offering all the key features and performance levels demanded by system design engineers. Micrel also offers reduced feature set versions in space-saving 8-pin SOIC packages - these are the MIC2588 and the MIC2594. For existing applications, the MIC2588 is a pin-for-pin compatible equivalent to the LT1640, the LT1640A, and the LT4250.

The MIC2589/MIC2589R-1/-2BM and the MIC2595/MIC2595R-1/-2BM are
available now in a 14-pin SOIC packages for $2.38 each when purchased in 10,000-piece OEM quantities.
