Power Controllers provide power supply tracking and sequencing.

Press Release Summary:

Models MIC2584 and MIC2585 are dual-channel, hot swap power controllers available in 16-pin and 24-pin TSSOP packages, respectively. They operate from system supply voltages from 1.0-13.2 V with input surge protection up to 20 V. Model MIC2584's default output voltage mode is tracking, whereas Model MIC2585 can be configured for output voltage tracking or staggered-mode operation. Both devices control inrush current during PC board insertion.

Micrel's Dual Channel Hot Swap Power Controller Adds Power Supply Tracking and Sequencing

Adaptive tracking between two supplies regardless of load capacitance solves power-up and power-down sequencing issues of today's complex digital ICs

Supports input voltages down to 1.0V

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (June 10th 2003) - A new, dual channel hot swap power controller providing flexible power sequencing capabilities is now available from Micrel Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in power management and high speed communications integrated circuits.

Available in 16-pin and 24-pin TSSOP packages respectively, the MIC2584 and MIC2585 offer the design engineer a very flexible means of controlling the sequencing of power supply voltages to the various ICs in their system. This flexibility allows these devices to meet a variety of power sequencing requirements across several platforms. Most importantly, these devices offer true tracking of each supply relative to the other without the need for external clamping diodes and without regard to load capacitance. The MIC2584's default output voltage mode is tracking whereas the MIC2585 can be configured for output voltage tracking- or staggered-mode operation.

In addition to providing system protection against overcurrent fault conditions, the MIC2585 also monitors each output for overvoltage and undervoltage events. Both devices also control inrush current during PC board insertion, which preserves system voltage regulation requirements. A single-pin enable controls both channels and permits the orderly removal of external power FET drive upon PC board removal. The devices operate from system supply voltages from 1.0V to 13.2V with input surge protection up to 20V.

The MIC2584 and MIC2585 offer the designer a simple, yet flexible, means to not only provide standard fault protection but also sequence power to complex ICs whose power sequencing requirements continue to evolve. In large distributed power systems, the MIC2585 can be easily cascaded to support any number of power supplies.

The MIC2584-JBTS is available now in 16-pin TSSOP for $2.95 in 10,000-piece quantities. The MIC2585-1/-2JBTS is available now in 24-pin TSSOP package for $3.16 in 10,000-piece quantities.
