Power Controllers offer 400 µs overcurrent timeout delay.

Press Release Summary:

Models MIC1640 and MIC2594 are hot-swap power controllers that operate from -19 to -80 V with 100 V surge protection. They allow safe insertion and removal of line cards from -48 V backplanes. Produced in 8-pin, SOIC packages, units control external N-channel MOSFET to provide inrush-current limiting and over-current protection. Each device provides either open-drain, active-HIGH or active-LOW Power-is-Good control output for DC-DC power converters.

Micrel Announces High-Voltage Hot-Swap Power Controller for Telecom and Networking Line Card Applications

o Output current regulation with built-in timeout delay minimizes inrush current and false circuit-breaker trip with minimum external components
o Pin-for-pin compatible equivalent to LT1640/LT1640A/LT4250 parts

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (February 10, 2004) - Four, highly integrated -80V hot-swap power controllers that will find wide application in telecom, networking, and datacom line card applications are announced by Micrel Semiconductor (Nasdaq: MCRL), an industry leader in analog and power management integrated circuits.

Pin-for-pin compatible with LT1640, LT1640A and LT4250 parts, these new controllers operate from -19V to -80V with 100V surge protection and are designed to provide for safe insertion and removal of line cards from live backplanes.

Produced in 8-pin SOIC packages, the MIC2588 and MIC2594 will control an external N-channel MOSFET in order to provide inrush-current limiting and over-current protection with minimal external components. In addition, each of these devices provides either an open-drain, active-HIGH or active-LOW "Power-is-Good" control output for DC-DC power converters.

System reliability and flexibility are both increased since the system designer can optimize several key parameters including input undervoltage lockout, input overvoltage protection, and in-rush overcurrent protection. In addition, both devices can attempt power up into a shorted load, incorporate a 400µs overcurrent detector timeout delay, and regulate the output current to ensure inrush currents are controlled and managed regardless of the amount of load capacitance. The MIC2594 additionally provides the system design engineer with the ability to program any amount of input undervoltage lockout hysteresis (or ON-OFF threshold control) complying with ANSI standards.

These new controllers have been specifically designed to address existing and emerging telecom and networking line card applications by offering all the key features and performance levels demanded by system design engineers. Micrel also offers enhanced feature set versions in 14-pin SOIC packages. These are the MIC2589 and the MIC 2595, which are capable of controlling/sequencing multiple DC-DC power converters.

The MIC2588 and MIC2594-1/-2BM are available now in 8-pin SOIC packages for $1.64 each when purchased in 10,000-piece OEM quantities.
