New Power Amplifier from SST Communications Brings High-Efficiency WLAN to Power-Sensitive Embedded Applications

New Low-Power, Small-Footprint Power Amplifier Enables 802.11g in Embedded Applications, Including Smart Phones, Portable Gaming Systems and PDAs

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 12 / / -- SST Communications, a developer of RF integrated circuits and modules for a wide range of wireless and multimedia applications and a subsidiary of SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) (NASDAQ:SSTI), a leader in flash memory technology, today announced the latest addition to its high-efficiency line of power amplifiers for WiFi applications. The new 12LP14E power amplifier supports the high-capacity 802.11g wireless standard and features one of the lowest power consumption specifications available on the market today, 90mA at 18 dBm. The 12LP14E power amplifier's low power consumption and small packaging -- a 2mm x 2mm QFN package with a height of only .45mm -- make it a compelling solution for space-and power-constrained portable applications, such as smart phones, PDAs and handheld gaming platforms.

"The wireless connectivity benefits that helped WiFi revolutionize the notebook PC market are now available in a wide range of high-volume portable consumer electronics devices. And just as notebook PCs have migrated from 802.11b to the faster 802.11g WiFi standard, consumer electronics devices are now looking to do the same," said Daniel Chow, president, SST Communications. "The main obstacles designers face when trying to incorporate 802.11g in non-notebook, embedded consumer applications is power consumption and size. Our new 12LP14E eliminates these obstacles by providing a very high-efficiency power amplifier in an extremely small package to help proliferate the use of 802.11g beyond notebook PCs and into other portable consumer electronics."

In addition to its thrifty power consumption, low idle current of 45 mA and small packaging, the 12LP14E power amplifier has excellent linearity of less than 3 percent added EVM (error vector magnitude) at 18 dBm output power, which is essential for 54 Mbps 802.11g operation while meeting the standard's spectrum mask at +22 dBm min. Operating over the 2.4 to 2.5 GHz band, the 12LP14E power amplifier requires few external components and delivers 32 percent power added efficiency (PAE) at 22 dBm output power for 802.11g, and 30 percent PAE at 21.5 dBm output for 802.11b. Also included in the 12LP14E is an integrated temperature stable power detector to provide a reliable solution for power control.

SST Communications' power amplifiers are manufactured using a reliable InGaP/GaAs HBT technology, with tested MTTF exceeding 6x10^8 hours at 100 degrees C. The company has supplied power amplifiers to leading WLAN system vendors who adopt WLAN transceiver solutions from companies including Atheros and Broadcom.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the 12LP14E power amplifier are available now, with volume production scheduled for Q4 2007. The device is priced at $0.36 in 10,000-unit quantities.
