Overview
IBM expands the SureMark(TM) point-of-sale (POS) printer product line with new SureMark models that support electronic document scanning. SureMark customers know that SureMark printers are durable and have high performance and high function. They help provide POS users with significant improvements in printing speed, quiet operation, open interfaces, and exceptional usability over previous models, all of which enable retailers and customers in other segments to attract and retain customers and streamline their operations.

With these new SureMark printer models, customers can exploit the tremendous savings potential of Electronic Document Imaging. Models TG8 and DG8 offer an integrated scanning device for document imaging plus IBM-exclusive patented technology that reads the check MICR line both optically (via Optical Character Recognition, OCR) and magnetically (via MICR reading), reducing misreads of account and routing information. This new capability is referred to as OCR/MICR. Retailers in the United States will benefit from the savings potential of Electronic Check Conversion when they employ the new imaging and accurate MICR reading capabilities of the 4610 printers.

Additional new functions offered by these new models include advanced page-mode graphics support, faster check processing (via a faster flipping mechanism), and a new PowerPC® processor platform that will enable exciting future capabilities.
For customers who want to purchase the new 4610 models today but can't support the document imaging functions via their own operating systems and applications, the new models are fully compatible with Model TI4, while offering the high-accuracy MICR reading provided by OCR/MICR.

Customers who want to upgrade their Model TI4, TG4, DI4, and DG4 printers to support all of the functions of the new printer models can purchase an available RPQ for this purpose.

Key prerequisites
Electronic journaling software is required. SureMark Model TG8 and DG8 printers attach to IBM 4694 and SurePOS(TM) 700 Series systems. They also attach to RS-232 and USB ports on non-IBM POS terminals.

Planned availability date
August 15, 2003

Description
Product positioning
The SureMark printers are designed for retailers who have implemented or plan to implement electronic journaling. There is no physical journal station in these printers because they are intended for image-conscious retailers who require quiet printing at the front end of the store and need faster transaction times at the POS register. These printers will also appeal to retailers who wish to take advantage of an opportunity to market to their customers by using the printer's stored graphic image capability for printing color coupons and product logos. U.S. retailers who choose to streamline their operations via Electronic Check Conversion will benefit from the check scanning and OCR/MICR capabilities of Models TG8 and DG8.

The Model 3, 3R, 4, and 4R impact printers will remain available for retailers who continue to use paper journals, require 86 column document insert, or must meet governmental fiscal requirements.
