Portable Stereo Amplifier provides 2.8 W/channel.

Press Release Summary:

Model TS4999, 2-channel class D stereo audio amplifier IC features 3D audio that creates effect of wide channel separation. Selectable 3D modes allow audio image to be focused behind, above, or below listener. Unit delivers up to 2.8 W/channel into 4 W speaker loads and achieves distortion of 1%, with high power-supply rejection ratio preventing supply noise from entering audio signal. It has 10 nA power-saving mode minimizing battery drain when audio features are not in use.

STMicroelectronics Increases Power Output of Portable Stereo Amplifiers Featuring 3D Audio Capabilities

Delivering 2.8 Watts per channel TS4999 extends ST's class D amplifier family for portable applications

GENEVA, Feb. 25 / / - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in analog ICs, has introduced the TS4999, a two-channel, 2.8W class D stereo audio amplifier IC featuring 3D audio effects that improves sound quality from portable equipment.

As end users demand progressively better audio experiences on the move, portable devices such as MP3 players, notebook computers, PDAs, and cellphones are being judged according to higher audio-quality metrics, such as stereo channel separation. Wide separation is acknowledged by audiophiles to deliver a better listening experience; home-audio equipment can easily achieve this separation by ensuring a large distance between speakers. To overcome the physical restrictions of portable form factors, the TS4999's 3-dimensional audio creates the effect of wide channel separation. In addition, selectable 3D modes allow the audio image to be focused behind, above or below the listener, which can also improve performance and comfort for headphone users.

Using class-D operation to achieve up to 90% efficiency, the TS4999 benefits from reduced heat dissipation, which allows smaller portable products with high power density. Combined with the low minimum supply voltage of 2.4V the TS4999's high efficiency also allows battery-powered products to operate for longer before recharging. A 10nA power-saving mode also minimizes battery drain when the audio features are not being used.

The TS4999 meets high standards for output power and distortion, by delivering up to 2.8 Watts per channel into 4-Ohm speaker loads and achieving distortion of 1%. Its high power-supply rejection ratio also prevents power-supply noise from entering the audio signal.

Delivered in an 18-bump flip-chip lead-free package, the TS4999 is in full production and is available at $1.10 in quantities of 1000 pieces.
