New Power...New Power Feed In Portable Magnetic Drill Performance

Hougen Manufacturing (Flint, MI) is introducing the latest innovation to its longstanding lineup of portable magnetic drill technologies-the HMD925 model drill featuring power feed and heavy-duty hole making capability. The new drill unit uses Hougen's Rotabroach® tools to produce holes from 7/16" to 1-1/4" diameter thru materials up to 2" thick using the power feed option. Maximum capacity using manual feed operation is an impressive 1-1/2" diameter. While the HMD925 is large on workload capacity, the unit is compact, measuring just 17-1/8" H x 10-13/16" W x 11-3/16"L, and the drill is lightweight at 37 lbs., or about 19% lighter than power feed models of comparable holemaking capacity. Additionally, the Hougen model is more economical with costs said to be nearly 20% less then competitive units.

But, the HMD925 is not lightweight when it comes to features. The new drill incorporates solid-state circuitry that monitors and adjusts the self-feed action to continuously maintain optimum drilling performance throughout the entire length of cut. This helps to provide predictable productivity, long tool life and lower tooling costs, and excellent hole quality in both dimensional and finish aspects. The feed motor, gearing and drive system are enclosed in the drill housing to maintain a compact profile.

The electrical is a heavy-duty 120V, 50/60Hz at 8A and 960 Watt system, featuring a 7.2 amp spindle motor delivering a high torque 450 RPM. The magnetic base of the HMD925 measures 3-1/8" W x 6-9/16" L and develops 1742 lb. of dead lift strength and
820 lb. drillpoint breakaway force on 1" thick plate.. .and 1014 lb. and 680 lb., respectively, when tested on 3/8" thick plate.

All of the operational controls of the HMD925, including motor on/off and magnetic engagement, are located on the feed handle side of the unit, providing good ergonomics and ease of use. The control panel also integrates Hougen's safety switch indicator light, linked to the motion detector switch in the base of the magnet, that visually alerts users to the possibility of non-secure magnetic operation, and a light to indicate power feed is activated.

The power feed activation switch is positioned in the center of the feed handle hub, a simple lift of the latch-type handle engages the system, pushing it in halts the feed. This design, unlike other units that use the feed handles as the power feed switch, is instrumental in preventing accidental engagement of the power feed system when the drill is being used in the manual feed mode.

The HMD925 uses Hougen "12,000-Series" Rotabroach® Annular Cutters that cut round, burr-free holes from 50 to 80% faster than twist drills - with longer tool life. Because they are hollow and have Hougen's unique and time-proven tooth geometry, the "12,000-Series" Cutters typically require less horsepower and torque than traditional holemaking tools, thus providing the larger hole capacity for the lightweight portable drill. The addition of a RotaLoc(TM) spindle adapter allows the new drill to use Hougen's quick-change RotaLoc Annular Cutters.

The HMD925 package is complete with a safety chain, hex wrench, cutting fluid, and operator's manual.

In addition to the HMD925 unit, Hougen products comprise 14 other models of portable magnetic drills, with hole capacities to 3-1/16" diameter and 3" depth of cut, Punch-Pro(TM) Portable Electro-hydraulic Hole Punchers, plus a wide range of annular cutter series for a variety of applications, including sheet metal and tubing - for portable fabricating equipment as well as stationary machine tools.
