Newport Corporation Announces First Portable, Laser-Based Solution for Crime Scene Investigation

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 7 / -- Newport Corporation (NASDAQ:NEWP) today announced Reveal(TM), the first portable, continuous wave (CW), diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser-based solution designed to significantly improve crime scene investigation. Developed by Newport's Spectra-Physics Lasers Division, Reveal brings state-of-the-art technology previously only available in laboratories to the crime scene, and enables investigators to gather evidence that otherwise may be overlooked using currently available devices.

"Spectra-Physics was the first company to provide laser fluorescence technology to the forensic community," said Bruce Craig, vice president in charge of Newport's Spectra-Physics Laser Division. "Soon after, the Forensic Millennia(R) became the technology of choice in crime laboratories. Today, Reveal enables investigators to bring this same cutting-edge technology directly to a crime scene and dramatically improve their ability to collect evidence."

The laser-based Reveal system greatly improves the detection of latent fingerprints for identification. It also uncovers body fluids such as semen, saliva and sweat, as well as biological matter such as bone, teeth and skin fragments for DNA testing. In addition, Reveal enables the detection of biological and chemical agents by their specific color signatures when exposed to laser light.

The Reveal laser system consists of a DPSS laser, 22 feet of fiber optic cable and an ergonomic wand with zoom optics. The entire solution is contained in a single, portable flight case package. One investigator can easily transport Reveal to a crime scene and begin collecting evidence. The laser requires no warm-up time, enabling investigators to begin processing evidence immediately. After the laser is switched on, they use an ergonomic hand-held wand to sweep the scene for evidence and then examine and document their discoveries on location. Because Reveal employs a powerful 8W CW laser, investigators can detect untreated latent fingerprints on difficult surfaces such as dry walls, paper, fabric and skin. Reveal dramatically reduces the need for potentially harmful chemicals and saves time and cost.

"Spectra-Physics has once again taken the lead in forensic laser technology," Craig continued. "In 2004, the company's green Forensic Millennia laser was chosen by the producers and technical advisers of the television program CSI:NY to bring state-of-the-art crime fighting technology to their virtual crime lab. Even though it's exciting to see our lasers on television, we are even more excited to have law enforcement agencies adopting our technology to solve real cases and fight crime. In fact, our new Reveal laser has received excellent reviews from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which was one of the first agencies to place orders for the portable laser."
