Non-Isolated Point-of-Load Converters Support Intermediate Bus Converters

February 2nd, 2005, Tucson, Arizona - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has announced the addition of three new non-isolated NFA series DC-DC converters to its Volant family of point-of-load (POL) products.

C&D Technologies' non-isolated product range continues to grow giving OEMs a wide range of modules from which to choose. A comprehensive array of features and options helps designers find the ideal solution for their application.

Available in industry standard packages with a surface mount, open frame, PTH (pin through hole) design, the new NFA Series converters have a minimal size and footprint making them ideal for high-density applications. Offered in 10A, 16A and 20A models, these high reliability non-isolated Point-Of-Load (niPOL) converters boast efficiencies of up to 95 per cent.

The 20A model has a versatile pin-out and package, while the 10A and 16A models are Distributed-power Open Standards Alliance (DOSA) compatible. With an extended input voltage range of 6V to 14V, the NFA Series supports 4:1, 5:1 and 6:1 intermediate bus converters Intermediate Bus Architecture (IBA) applications and are output voltage programmable by an external resistor.

Available in positive and negative enable logic models, the NFA Series offers monotonic start-up with pre-bias and an optional power good signal. For system level power up, the NFA Series also has a sequence feature for voltage turn-on/off tracking. This feature enables designers to control voltage rails to start-up in a sequential manner without the need for external circuitry.

"As bus converters become more widely adopted in the industry, downstream niPOL converters must be compatible with upstream bus converters," said Kulbir Dhillon, director, Business Development, C&D Technologies. "Now part of our Volant family, among the widest range of niPOLs available in the industry in SMT and PTH packages, the NFA Series provides system designers with a high-performance and flexible solution for IBA and POL applications."

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialized focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.

The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, USA, with manufacturing in the USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies and magnetics, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
