Original Press Release:

Artesyn's 30 Amp POL Converters are Perfect Fit for Densely Packed Boards

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan. 20 - Artesyn Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:ATSN) today launched two series of ultra compact 30 amp point-of-load converter modules for use on densely packed PCBs.

The converters enable designers to overcome the problems of co-locating high-current, low-voltage sources with the silicon devices they are powering. The new SIL30E vertical-mount modules occupy a board area of just 0.6 square inch, while the new surface-mount SMT30E modules are only 0.32 inch high -- making them perfect for systems with tight card pitches. Both series of products feature exceptionally high current densities -- the SMT30E, for example, achieves in excess of 136 amps per cubic inch. They also maximize efficiency and usable power: both converter series achieve 92% at 12V in, 3.3V out. A further advantage is that the high switching frequency minimizes the number of external capacitors that are needed, and allows the use of smaller, lower profile magnetic components.

SIL30E and SMT30E non-isolated POL (point-of-load) converters accommodate output voltages from 0.8 to 3.63V and can deliver up to 30 amps -- which is at least 75% more current than any comparably sized competitive product on the market. The converters form the latest additions to Artesyn's family of POLA products, which now includes 52 models spanning a current range of 5 to 30 amps. This wide product choice facilitates precise application matching and simplifies migration to higher current converters when needed. By replacing two 15 amp POL converters with a single 30 amp model, for example, designers can now achieve a 50% saving in board real estate and reduce their bill of materials by up to 40%.

Artesyn's SIL30E and SMT30E POL converters are fully compatible with similar products produced by other members of the Point-Of-Load Alliance -- which includes Texas Instruments, Astec Power of Emerson Network Power and Ericsson Power Modules -- offering users considerable sourcing flexibility, long-term security of supply and support for very high volume applications.

The SIL30E vertical-mount POL converter features a single-in-line package with a footprint of just 2.0 x 0.31 inch and a height of 0.5 inch. Its surface-mount counterpart, the SMT30E, has an industry-standard 1.3 x 0.53 inch footprint and an above-board height of only 0.32 inch. The small physical size and very low internal power dissipation of these converters enable designers to maximize system performance by placing them immediately adjacent to the load -- even on very densely packed boards. They are particularly suitable for high-end applications in the telecommunications and data communications markets, such as optical switches and high capacity network routers.

Intended primarily for boards that use distributed power architectures with an intermediate 12V bus, Artesyn's SIL30E and SMT30E series POL converters provide designers with an extremely flexible means of handling different voltage conversion requirements. They have a wide input voltage range of 8 to 14V, enabling a variety of isolated bricks and intermediate bus converters to be used for generating the bus voltage, as well as supporting a 12V AC/DC power architecture. Furthermore, even when delivering their full 30 amp current, the converters have a very wide output trim range of 0.8 to 3.63V, accommodating the core and I/O low-voltage supply needs of many of the latest ASICs, network processors and DSPs.

Artesyn's SIL30E and SMT30E POL converters feature remote sense and remote on/off facilities, have no minimum load requirement, and are comprehensively protected against over-temperature and short-circuit conditions. They are also suitable for forced air or convection cooled environments and accommodate a wide operational temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celcius, with derating. The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals -- including EN60950 (TUV Product Service) and UL/cUL60950.

In OEM quantities of 1000, unit prices are US$23 for both the vertical- mount SIL30E and the surface-mount SMT30E. Standard lead-time for both models is stock to 6-8 weeks.
